How to know who downloaded what

Hi Guys,

I have an ADSL line at work just for unrestricted browsing, the line is shared by a couple of people and someone keeps capping the line.

Can anyone point me in a way to limited the usage per PC or just to know how much each PC has used? At the moment people connect to the router via cable and wireless. Should i setup a proxy server? how do i get around the wireless access then, would i need another router? I am using a telkom wireless zyxel router.

Proxy would probably be the best option.

definately a proxy - you can use squid and limit sites/filetypes/usage - draw reports etc etc

..or Smoothwall with SARG (Squid Analysis Report Generator) will do the job just as nicely.

For more control, you can add Advanced Proxy for more control.

Keep in mind that Smoothwall and ClarkConnect both are dedicated firewalls, and need a dedicated PC to run on. (Meaning it does NOT run on Windows in the background).

Just wondering about the expansion of this kind of set-up: Will it be easy to add a payment gateway to a Smoothwall set-up so that users can opt to buy more bandwidth once they've completely consumed their data transfer allowance?

in the mean while you can be nasty and block places like facebook,youtube and myspace and also block the port for bittorrent and all his chommies on the routers firewall.

If the line still gets capped then you know someone is downloading using http which means they could also be listing to 5fm or some other radio station using the web(this audio streaming seems to eat cap)

"BandwidthD tracks usage of TCP/IP network subnets and builds html files with graphs to display utilization. Charts are built by individual IPs,"

Its free and hosted by Sourceforge, I haven't tried so please let me know how it goes?

Another option is something like the Draytek router... you can monitor usage / throttle per IP. And at least you don't have to have a dedicated PC on top of that as well.

Use the squid proxy and calamaris analyzer (Don't know if it works in Windows) and the Linux firewall blocked everything else. So it was easy to see who did what.

I have a similair problem myself... though mine is at home. We have a boarder staying with us, and I think he taking advantage a bit TOO much.

I really dont have time to setup smoothwall, besides I dont have a spare PC anyway. I'd like to try the above, but not sure on one thing... Do I need to install this on all PC's? Or just one PC and then leave my PC on the whole day or what?
