How to set up a network

Make sure you have a folder shared on both PCs, all firewalls are turned off and the subnet mask on both PCs are 255.255.255.0. Make sure the first numbers of the IP address are the same (eg 192.168.0) and that the fourth number differs between the computers. Install the IPX/SPX protocol just in case (don't laugh, I've had many networks miraculously work because of this) and make sure the two PCs don't have the same machine names.

Oh yeah, and use Simple Sharing at first...

So I should use static IPs? Currently I use "Obtain IP address atomatically"

No walls, no electronic interference, perfectly flat surface, etc etc...

I'm able to get about 30 meters out of my current wireless setup before it starts degrading badly...

Thanks Beanie, you've put a bit of my mind at ease.

That should work but it really might be worth just buying a switch, they're cheap enough and then the one PC won't be on permanently.

Ok. Cant get this to work so the switch sounds like the best option. But now - What do I ask for when I go to the shop?

Ask them for the cheapest 4-port 100 Megabit switch, that ought to be enough to get them going :)

They only had an D-Link 8 port but not to expensive. How easy was this!! Plug and play and presto - Internet.... Should have done this in the first place.

Thanks for the advice.
