How to study without matric :)

there are various different intl. universities that will give sell you one you can just google it. But it doesnt seem good to be honest lol. Rather be legit.

Yes, the requirements imposed by the Department of Higher Education is rather strict on FET colleges. It requires a bare minimum of Grade 10 for admission for most, if nor all, of the diploma courses. Go visit an FET college (or, if you are up for explaining 10 times what you need, call the Department of Higher Education) and ask them for guidance.

I have a A-Level (did matric in Germany). Thereafter I completed an apprenticeship in hotel management (3 years).
Been out of the hotel industry for years and I would like to start studying. I have plenty time to do so.

Where do I start? Do I first need to get a diploma to be able to get a degree? I guess my 3 years of hotel management count here as a diploma, not sure though.
Do I even qualify for university/unisa?

Does anybody have a contact person at unisa that will actually understand what I'm talking about. I have spoken to 3 people there and they don't understand the qualifications I have.

Can you provide a bit more info on the bolded part, school, courses etc.

A-levels 'should' get you into SA universities but I think it requires a bit of extra scrutineering by the university.

Basically I finished my Abitur in a german gymnasium. More info here on that here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abitur
I see there it is equivalent to a A-Level.

After school I joined the army for 2 years. Thereafter I finished my apprenticeship. Worked for a few hotels all over etc.. Back in SA since 2005. Started my own business in 2008.

I'm 30 now and would like to study business management and economics and get a degree. I don't have to, am doing well without a it, just would like to study and gain the knowledge :)

I don't think you will have any problems. Standards at gymnasiums are high and more advanced than a local matric I would say.

There is a local accreditation body that deals with foreign qualifications. If I find their name I will let you know and you can contact them.

Be a bit more specific wrt the qualification.

I doubt it though unless they give you special exemption or age based exemption.

That's not really the real question?

Look forward ; not back

sure. ask unisa.my sister did a bridge year at unisa and is now halfway through her degree. theres also age exemption.

No, you cannot do a degree without matric, no exception. You can however do a diploma if you meet certain criteria. Its with exception that you will get exempted in your circumstances (but still possible). Bridge courses are usually for students who did not get exemption or did not take the required subjects at school.

From UNISA:

  • National Certificate (vocational) at level 4 with entry level: degree
  • If you do not have an exemption certificate, please make contact with Unisa’s Access and Matriculation Exemption Office about whether you qualify for any other types of exemption certificates (eg on the grounds of foreign qualifications or post-school qualifications)

Bachelor of Technology degree

To be able to register for a Bachelor of Technology degree, you must hold an applicable National diploma.

There is a difference between the age exemption for students who did not get university exemption and those that did not get matric. Without matric (or an equivalent) you cannot study a degree regardless of your age. There talks about changing this as there are hundreds of thousands of adults who want to study towards a degree but cannot as they did not get matric.

I don't see why matric should be a prerequisite, matric work helped me cover about 1 maybe 2 weeks of varsity work, the standard of education is not even comparable to be really honest. There is also no given that someone who did well in matric will perform well at varsity, it is a whole different type of learning all together.

Any graduate or tertiary student will agree 100% with you (including me) but its just how it is. When I did matric in '93 I went to school 2 out of 5 days and then still only attended 4 of my 7 daily classes yet I passed with exemption. But in the last 2 semesters at UNISA I've only passed 3 of 7 subjects thus confirming your statement.

Nobody says its fair, sadly its just how it works.

I left school in the middle of Grade 11 to join the family business. Now in my late 30's I feel like doing something to improve my business skills.

For the past 20 years I grossly underestimated the value of a decent tertiary education in operating a successful business.(Branson would diagree with me I know).

I basically want to do a diploma in Business Admin or something similar.
With something behind my name it would give the confidence to run the business more effectively.

What do I need in order to get a degree instead of a diploma in business.
I'm looking at correspondence through a certified institution.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Pretty easy to be honest.....I keep mine in the cupboard.

/ waits to see who doesn't click lol.

I just received an email yesterday which informs me that my application for admission for a PGCE (Senior Phase & FET) was unsuccessful.

I've got a friend of mine who has already admitted to register for the same course as mine, we were studying together grade 12 and I got best results than his, we also went to Mangosuthu Univ. of Tech. I also did well than he, so my worry is 'how come he is admitted and I'm not?'

So I wrote a letter appealing to them to re-consider my application or check for me if I qualify for other phases like Foundation & Intermediate phases or advise me on what to do from now on cause I want to do PGCE next year.

Anyone guys who can help regarding this matter is more than welcome
