How to you handle constant set-backs?

I'm curious to know how you handle constant set-backs... I'm in the situation where I worked for several months, things started looking good, then all of a sudden ***** storm* and back to 0 again. I'm basically in the same situation now as I was this time last year.

There's several things I know I could have done better, but at this point I feel like all that effort was for nothing.

Another thing that annoys me is to see how many other people just seem to have things handed to them on a silver platter.

So back to the original question... how do you handle constant set-backs? Do you drink yourself in a coma, come back and go "**** you I'm going to make this **** work" or do you just do the former and hope the problem goes away... or what?

(p.s, first person to comment on my grammar or spelling and not have any insightful or inspiring input in this thread will get their asses handed to them)
 
You spelled ***** wrong :D

Sorry to hear that things are going bad for you at the moment. Sitting in a similar position, but drinking won't help. You end up with a headache and you feel bad for wasting money on all the alcohol. Best thing in my opinion is just to try again and improve on the things you know you can.

It depends on the setback.
I used to find a binge drinking session helped with crap days or minor setbacks. I would wake up feeling crap, but with some clarity. Pick myself up and keep on trucking. Now I do that on occassion, but i also try kill myself at sports (which is far healthier)

Large setbacks are different, and last year it felt like everytime i was gonna see the light, i got kicked back down again. I went to a few extremes, planned for these setbacks etc
I know what you mean that it seems like some ppl get everything handed to them. But if you look a bit closer, i reckon you will find they have other issues (which may even seem trivial to you) that are bringing them down.

Battle plans help quite a bit as well, I would list the issues and then draw up a plan/timeline to get out of the issue/resolve it. OH, and rule 32. Enjoy the little things
 
Take a deep breath, scream into a pillow, wipe my eyes and carry on.

Keep going is all I can say. Between the ages of 19 and 25 I went thru the same thing. 6 or 7 of what I call false starts. Things just start going well when it all implodes. Then I got over the hurdle and it all went smoother. Not smooth mind you, because I have danced on the edge of a blade juggling everything I have a few times since then too, just these times I managed not to drop anything....

I think the main thing that changed was I met my wife. Having another perspective on things from someone you can trust helps you dodge many bullets and you help each other over the hurdles.

So yea, I didn't do anything to make it change, life just happened and it went better for me.
 
oh acid - I also would like to know how folks tend to handle these as well.

I also have had just about enough of it as well.

December - 2 days after having glazing installed in a new house I am having built - they steal them all.

This week alone have had another attempted break-in and my missus just had her battery stolen whilst at work.

This is despite all the other problems at work and the rest - so yes - I believe I am due for a breather.
 
It takes a damned lot of effort and self determination but you have to force yourself to get up and carry on.

I have been retrenched once before myself and spent then next 6 months having doors shut in my face, I just carried on though and am in a much better position now.

My wife also became very despondent at a stage, she had just completed her articles and was starting to build her career but after her boss got drunk and threatened her with physical violence for the 3rd time she just had to pack up her things and go. Right back to zero for her as well, its taken her a bit more than year now but she is also finally starting to see the results of not letting it get her down and things are picking up again now.

Its difficult, but you can't let yourself slip, even for a moment. Stay positive, face each day as it comes and screw the world. After what I have been through in my life I am of a firm belief that the only person that can get me down is myself and that is simply because I don't allow any one else to.

Well I am trying to live my life on the fox terrier mentality - If you can't eat it or f**k it p1ss on it and have a nap. Ok enough with the corny jokes. I have learnt that obsessing about the bad things that happen rarely solves anything (it might actually prevent you from solving it as you don't always notice other possibilities) note down the problem, note the causes and make a list of possible solutions. For example - you start working for a company things go well etc but you work many hours and end up with a heart attack. So the problem is (heart attack, consequences are numerous when you survive), causes - bad lifestyle, stress, smoking and definitely not enough sleep (too many hours at work). Solution - find alternative job that has less stress, requires fewer hours that makes you happy while still supplying sufficient income. You can break this down even further by specifying jobs you would be interested in.

This mentality has worked for me.

Man up! Grow some balls and realise there's nothing in the world more rewarding that scratching them will sitting on a couch doing ***all!
 
Take up some physical activity that gets you away from your PC and/or work environment.

Take up MMA* or rock climbing or parachuting or ballroom dancing.

*If you are naturally violent, do not go for this. Having an angry and frustrated guy that knows how to beat up someone at work is not fun for anyone. If you are not naturally violent then this is a good option. Nothing like getting you frustration out by beating up some inanimate object (heavy bag).
 
I know what you mean. 2009 was a crap year for me. 2010 was worse by far. I cringe when I think what this year may have in store.

Yep. Sad, but true.

Nothing but plan an escape route and wait for clock to tick...

Even if a new problem compounds another, just push on.

I noticed that I felt better when I realise that sh*t could always be worse.

I agree! We all tend to focus on the problem or challenge we are faced with instead of spending time finding a solution that problem.
 
working towards a goal and having determination and belief that things will be better. Last year started as a bad year for me. I had reached my low point, business was not doing well, i was not saving any money, it
was an all time low. I put my car up for sale, planned to move out. And Didn't have much furniture in the house...

Then one day i came back from work and said to my gf we are buying a couch today, i had had enough of sitting in camp chairs... I took my last savings and bought a couch.

After the couch things went well for me. Business started picking up. I had a lot to save and to buy furniture.

What started as the worst year of my life turned to be the most successful year of my life yet!!!

So how you get over set-backs is that as long as you are still breathing you fight with all that you have...
