I was feeling similarly the other day. I was angry about my plans for life not having worked out, and being in a job I don't really like that much. I was on the train back home when I saw something that put everything into perspective.
For those of you who ride the trains in Cape Town, hawkers are a familiar sight. A hawker got on, but he was unusually quiet. Usually these guys are shouting what they have to sell and what their prices are, so it's really quite unusual to see one just walking along. As he got closer, I saw a sign around his neck that read:
"Hello, I am deaf. I sell sweets, chips and chocolates." The prices for what he was selling were below that, and at the bottom of the sign "Thank you."
Yes, our setbacks our important to us individually, but if it's anything that my Buddhist teacher has taught me, is that a lot of people think they need more than they do. So when I am feeling down about stuff not being right in my life, I do two things:
- Ask myself "What am I doing to rectify the situation?" and "Do I have everything I NEED?"
- Remind myself "It could be a lot worse."
