How was HIV created?

Reading the latest HIV threads has got me questioning how HIV came about in the first place.

Was it a virus that has always been around and we only developed the necessary skills and technology to detect it recently?
How does a virus just create itself - what are a virus' beginnings?
Is it a mutation from another virus?
Considering that the virus is constantly mutating, is it possible that at one point is was merely harmless and mutated to become what it is today?
Are there any truths at all to the conspiracy theories that it might have been a man-made virus? Is it in fact the worst case of biological terrorism the world has ever seen perpetrated?
Scientifically speaking, what is the point of a virus? (please, no religious opinions that it is gods way of population control - we've all heard that before and it is hardly scientific) Even bacteria serves a purpose, so what it the purpose of a virus?

Post some of your own questions regarding the origination of HIV if you have any.

it's purpose is the same of ours, animals and birds - to survive.

if you look at the human race, we have the same tendencies as your regular virus - multiply, consume, and destroy.
 
as far as i know certain primates can live with the virus without it attacking their immune system, but when transferred to humans it kill of all the white blood cells. People usually ask how it was transferred, and usual get the dirty trucker storys. I rate it was from when one of these tribal sessions, where they kill the animal and drink its blood straight from the body...
 
I know of a few theories:

1. It was a virus that was only suppose to effect black people or that black people can catch very easily. The guy then went onto say how many whites do you know with aids? I am not sure about this theory as i do not believe the dna make-up of white blacks coloureds etc is that different.
2. Some American scientists tested the virus on monkey/apes somewhere in africa and the locals ate or had sex with the apes/monkeys and got the disease.
3. The theory that gay people started it is another one which again i do not believe.

these are the worst theories i've heard about anything in my entire life!
 
i believe it evolved from a weak virus into a very deadly virus against humans
 
Theory : it is a viruz distrubuted in central Africa when the world peace gave them free grain, something similar to that meant to target the lifestyle of Africa, you know the 4 wifes, type of thing, not trying to discriminate here.

another theory that it was meant to target homosexual people eventually it spread via the double adapters and its more harmful to Africa because it fits their lifestyle.

Another theory told by Thabo Mbeki is that HIV and AIds have nothing to do with eachother.

Morgoth ok so you your first says they where screwing but does not explain the origins of the virus and only that they had 4 wifes. Do you think that blacks are only ones who screw everything they see? The question still remains is where did it come from now how many wifes blacks had.

I am a believer in this theory out of all of them, the Africa theory does not explain how aids exploded world wide, how many people would have come into contact with tribal african from africa? Not nearly enough for the virus to explode.

Well this may explain the exploding, doubt in the 40's they could detect the virus.

I am not sure, aids have spread across the western world as well but, lets be honest it is top in Africa, the theory of how it originated, goes from American scientist to having sex with apes ( LOL) , to poisoning food supply by the colonialists after they moved out, I am not sure.
 
I remember something about a monkey that bit this one guy, and then it spread like that. The virus was carried in the monkeys.
