Cut local documentaries/ soaps/ movies. They're expensive to produce and most people involved in them train at SABC and then leave to further their careers.

So what is wrong with having a local television /movie industry? Why do you want to be just fed the overseas rubbish? And what is wrong with the concept that the SABC is the place to get training and skills development in the industry done?
We a many cultural groupings an niche markets to address. We should have no problems at all in keeping everyone in a position n to receive entertainment in their own language and culturally relevant.

Yes! That is what was planned for. The capacity provided by DTT will allow for this ideal where all niche markets would be able to be addressed.

How many managers do you need to run a POS Corp like SABC.

There's your problem right there.

Another problem is that those that won't go near SABC because of content and quality subsidize the millions who feed off local rubbish like Generations and Scandal without paying a cent in tv licences.

If I can get Game of Thrones on SABC in full HD I'll pay.

This would help I think but they will need plenty filler for some of the languages/channels.

Perhaps not the above but the option to get any channel in your language of preference?

Prime time advert slots need to be less (one advert break per 30 minute episode with adverts before and after).

Kids channel

Premium content channel with no advert breaks during movies/episodes/sport that only TV licence holders can view.

Partner with Netflix for a channel.

1. Leave the new Board alone to get on with its job!
1a. Sort out how the SABC communicates with the public and all stakeholders.
2. Monitor progress consistently and in depth.
3. Revise all decisions taken since 1994 that have had a detrimental effect on the performance of the SABC.
4. Clear all the disciplinary issues relating to employees.
4a. Sort out all other litigation going on that is affecting the SABC. Bolster your Legal department in the short term if nec.
5. Sort any outstanding payments and come up with payments plans to meet these commitments.
6. Re-establish some semblance of independence for the SABC from political interference.
7. Let the personnel that are left that KNOW what is required of a public broadcaster to get on with their work!
8. Sort out the tv licensing mess! Come up with a plan to get the database back into a verifiable state and start prosecuting offenders! Make a few high profile examples of a few people. Look for possible candidates by searching social media and this forum! :twisted:

1. Decide on whether the country needs a Public Broadcasting Service and why.
2. Sort out the mandate of the SABC. Ratify or amend its existing mandate.
3. Structure a new funding model based on best practice around the Word for public broadcasting services. Understand the various models available, and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
a. Remember if funded out of state coffers, the SABC will always be under political pressure from the ruling party of the day.
b. Understand that getting some of the funding from a licence fee model, that it will go hand in hand with a fairly large effort to police the collection of those licence fees.
c. Accept the principal that some of the funding will come from advertising - which means make sure the services are relevant to the community served and that there is plenty to be got from addressing target markets and language groups etc.
d. Allow private funding by NGOs and other non-political interest groups.
4. Change the existing law if necessary to accommodate the above changes.

Ja, that was one of the motives behind suggestion that the DTT boxes should be encrypted by default. No pay - no watch. But that would only sort out over-the-air broadcasting and not other media ways ......

We all know how much of a mess the encryption of the DTT boxes caused ...
