How would you fix the SABC?

I would say sell it, except it's failure is too visible and no-one wants to buy a dead donkey. Ditch ALL cronyism appointments and hire (legally) qualified people with progressive marketing capabilities and in-depth merchandising skills. I can think of several media personalities who could competently meet these criteria - know what people want and don't force-feed them what you think they should have.

I dont know where you get these "stats" from but how can any company have 2067 supervisorys earning R50K per mth and rest of staff at R3.5K per mth with only 562 of them? I know people working at the SABC and there is for sure not more supervisory than staff and they most certainly do not earn 50K + per mth. I highly doubt these stats

These stats are based off the SABC Annual reports as published each year.

Also remember that the figures published probably include a number of factors such as your total cost to company, yes you not taking home 50k per month but you still cost your company in terms of medical aid subsidy, pension funds, provident funds, UIF, council fees, and not to mention any bonus they provide.

The results might also be skewed because you might have job codes in a supervisory level which earns at a much higher bracket then the lower job cards.

Also don't get hung up on the stats, they give an overall picture. If the sample is higher on the upper scale then it will always skew the average.

Remove motsoeneng, keep board positions on shorter contracts, drop the local music percentage on radio to attract revenue.

Back to basics. Deploy the "right" managers / CEO who understand what a public broadcaster's role is in society. Redirect the advertising/sponsorship money currently going to the Gupta's TV station to fund new programming.

Dump the existing management completely.
Make it free on the lines of BBC1, dumping the inefficient licencing, that no-one pays any attention to.
Establish a multi-disciplinary team drawn across society and public lines and parties, it is the national broadcaster, not the ANC's PR wing.

I would revert to a say 50 % local content senario with broader content a priority as to what is shown and dispense with almost all of the mindless soapies..would also then offer to go joint venture as a pay station broadcaster for those who want to contribute by doing away with the TV licence, and in this way by making better content payable directly by the viewer subscriber ..pay per channel or bundle..subsidized again by the advertisers etc....

Semi privatise it ala Telkom route, put strong legislation in place ensuring:
- its autonomy from political interference
- Its duties as a national broadcaster (must be some government and national sport stuff it covers for which it receives payment from State
- Ensure that it covers election based stuff but with fair coverage of all political parties
- It cannot receive bailouts from government, must be run for profit
- Get it broadcasting digital ASAP.

Can't or shouldn't run at a profit, BUT must cover all costs including a reserve for upgrades and replacements.
Pretty much all covered in the existing ACTs governing broadcasting and the SABC, BUT not necessarily strong enough in some sections. The real issue is the policing of the Acts to ensure compliance. .....

Bring in the private sector to manage and operate the SABC without ruling party / government influence or interferance

Suggest a specific Gupta company with a known record of being free of government influence and interference. I mean look how well they manage the ANN7 channel!

Take it apart. Fire everyone, restructure, start all over again.

Forget about TV (a dying medium) - stick to radio programs in the major vernacular (I hope that's not a racist term :erm:) languages because that's the only thing some people have access to. Outsource entertainment programs. Publish every financial transaction!

TV a dying medium? Wow. Please where have you been for the last 20 years or so? Is it possible to join you on your next trip into an alternative reality?

Cut your losses SABS - sell it to a new service provider that can bring better content with monthly subscriptions packages.

wow! the ___ have messed up the SABC too ?!!

The SABC is a mess right now, with an interim board, acting CEO, and not enough money to operate.

How would you fix the SABC, and what should its purpose be in South Africa?

shut those black woman at SAfm up (rowena baird, sakina etc.)& put the SABC in white people" control/management again (i remember how i used to get to watch the most amazing tv programs, movies etc. that i actually looked forward toputting the tv on -when whites were running the sabc!)
