pls. help. i can't access my keyboard which plugs into a usb that is disabled. i can't hit f2 to access bios settings to enable usb port that my keyboard is plugged into. is there a way to enable my usb port frpm windows xp. i am typing on onscreen kb so this is painful.

Buy a USB to PS/2 connector? (if your mobo has a PS/2 socket).

Resetting the bios (CMOS) too, may work. One way is to look at the mobo manual and cross a jumper or remove the battery and wait a few minutes.

thanks. can i reset/restore the bios defaults (without)
1 opening the hardware [don't have a clue abt the inside]
and
2 without a keyboard to access bios settings

thanks

No you would need to open the case to remove the battery/reset the CMOS with a jumper. Have you tried a different USB port?

Do you have a PS/2 connector on your case?
If yes, buy a USB to PS/2 converter and use that -

I think Computer Mania or IC should have something like that. They're usually cheap too.

First though, make sure you have a PS2 port on your case. Look at the pics to see what it looks like: (above link).

<- there's a pic of a keyboard with the USB to PS/2 converter attached. It's a tiny thing.

can you just not borrow a ps2 keyboard from a neighbour/friend/work, do what you need to do then give it back to them, with a thank you note.

He can go to IC, buy a PS2 keyboard- use it to get the USB ports to work then return it for a full refund (as long as the packaging is still OK). He could also just buy the converter and return that afterwards or keep it as they're really cheap (it may come in handy again). I've got one of those - it came with an older keyboard and at times I had to use it as USB keyboard wasn't recognised.

I've had a similar problem at work last week. My USB keyboard was recognised by BIOS - I could open BIOS and change things but Windows would not pick it up - nor the mouse - irrespective of WHICH ports I used. At the end I just swapped the keyboard out from the IT guy's desk and it worked. The old keyboard had worked fine until then.

this is not very ethical

I think it's ethical. IC resell returned stock, I know I've bought it before. If he were to damage it and hide the damage, then return for a refund - that would not be ethical. What's not ethical is his USB not working.

This is Incredible Connection we're talking about. I somehow can't bring myself to care.

But you could borrow a PS/2 keyboard from anyone who'll let you, I suppose.

Mmm, another trait?

yep, this is what i was talking about. Buying an item with the intention of using it and then returning it after it's used, this is unethical. I know incredible corruption try their hardest to rip us off but the bottom line is that it's not the right thing to do.

just go buy a usb ps2 adapter from Esquire. I bought one for R50 from them, not too bad imo

It would be even more correct for you to provide a way for this person to solve his problem, right?

Yes I've been ripped off by IC - for many thousands of Rands because of the info they posted and what their salespeople said - but the point is that they provide a 7 day refund service and if the new keyboard is no longer necessary the parent (of this post) can return it for a full refund instead of cluttering his home with more junk. Instead he can spend the money on something else at some other shop. Of course it should all be done in pristine packaging.

If he appreciates ICs customer service the parent may no doubt return to shop there at some stage PLUS IC gets free advertising and assurance of good service. Seems fair to me, and 'intentions' change in milliseconds, he may like his new keyboard or it may really be a piece of junk, plus he may do what he wants.

FFS instead of taking any questionable advice about buying stuff, just shutdown your PC, Unplug it. Open the side cover and look for the battery ( similar to a watch ) remove that battery for about 30 sec to a minute, replace the battery and problem solved.

That would be ideal. However the OP said he's too afraid to open his case.
