Howto restrict 3G modem to prefer EDGE connection only

I run Ubuntu Linux on a netbook and connect with a ZTE K3520-Z modem on it with no problems in town where 3G is available. At home in the sticks I can not connect because it picks up 3g but not enough to send and recieve data. Before this I used my phone and if I selected GPRS/EDGE only it worked but on dual band it didn't.
1. How do I configure my modem to run with GPRS/EDGE only?
2. How do I do it easily/automatically without reconfiguring the modem everytime.

To lock the modem to GPRS/EDGE only, open cutecom or minicom on your modem's secondary serial port and send 'AT+ZSNT=1,0,0'.
To set it back to automatic mode, send 'AT+ZSNT=0,0,0'.
To lock it to 3G/HSDPA only, send 'AT+ZSNT=2,0,0'.

This setting is stored in the modem's NVRAM so you should only have to change it when you move to a new location.
 
You can also do it using the Betavine VMC software from Vodafone. It works very well with the E220 and E156G modem. Not sure how it will work with a ZTE modem though. Perhaps give it a go and see.

When I am home tonight....I will find the link to the Betavine software for you. Or perhaps someone here can point you to it so long if they have it @ hand. Give it a go....worth a shot. I have tested it with my E220 and E156 Huawei modems, and it works great when it comes to forcing 3G or GPRS/EDGE only.

Nah....it is dead easy. It is two deb files. click click - ding dong! and you are done. There is also a readme file that you can follow included in the archive file that you extract to get the deb files.

Download the package. You should then have 3 .deb files. Pull those 3 .deb files to your desktop. Install them in the below order.

1. Double click on usb-modeswitch file and install
2. Double click on ozerocdoff and install
3. Run this command now in your terminal. Just copy and paste it

sudo aptitude install wvdial hal usb-modeswitch ozerocdoff python-twisted python-serial python-sqlite python-tz python-gobject python-dbus python-cairo python-crypto python-gtk2 python-gnome2 python-gnome2-extras lsb-release python-glade2

4. Now, and only now double click on the vodafone-mobile-connect file and install.

You should now have a Vodafone icon in your applications menu somewhere. Should be under the "internet" section...but just have a look for it...you will see it.
