Hi All,

Have an old HP 530 laptop which isn't getting power. It works fine on the battery, but now it's flat. Power cable is fine, but does not charge either the laptop or the battery when plugged into the laptop.

Is this generally repairable, or is this power connector part of the motherboard?

Thanks.

Have you tried taking the battery out of the laptop completely for 30 minutes?

Yes it has been out of the laptop for days. Tried again this morning with no luck.

So you've tried testing the cable on somebody else's laptop and it charges their laptop?

I had a similar problem but when I used my friends charger I realized my charger had gone(transformer burnt out) so bought a new one.

- Check charger, preferably in a known working laptop
- Also do same with battery
This will eliminate which ever is problematic.

If not...
- Open up laptop & check your power connector to motherboard.
- Best have a tester (multimeter) handy

Even if the brick outputs the correct voltage when measured does not mean it's fine, it could be failing under load. Best way to test is to plug it into another laptop or try another brick on your laptop.

Hi There,
The meter is a quick test. I would also try and get another charger and try that in the laptop to eliminate the problem being in the laptop itself.
Ponder is right though about the meter. a true test is to put it under load. If you take out the battery and run it does it work at all?

Regards

Tim

Thanks everyone. Brick is putting out correct voltage, but I don't have anything to do a load test yet.

Laptop works perfectly with a fully charged battery.

Without the battery, nothing. Not even a power LED with the charger plugged in.

Edit: Just tried a second, working power supply with the same result.

I take it the battery charges in another working laptop.
So if a working power supply it not working on your laptop, you should check the onboard connector of the laptop.

Correct. But access seems like quite a pain. I'm trying to figure out if these things are generally fixable. Can I just whip out the soldering iron and give it a bash, or should I take it in to someone?

Yip, take it to someone who has laptop with the same charger.
