I have a HP tx2500 series laptop which refuses to boot. All the LEDs light up and my num+caps flash continuously.

Did some research and it seems to be a common problem. GPU reflow is needed so where in Cape Town can I have this done? The place I tried today wanted to replace the entire motherboard I could not help but laugh as I know there is nothing wrong with the it.

I would guess any comp repair shop is just going to want to swap the mobo out............ think the dv**** series also had same issues.....google "gpu oven trick"

Letmerepair is a authorised place to have HP products repaired.

But, I've had endless issues with them - I even posted about it, but other than that, they are the goto guys for HP in Cape Town.

Worth mentioning that they are not approved HP repair place.
So i'd take a "out of warranty" unit to them and a "in warranty" unit to LMR.

That is indeed true. I think the HP tx2500 is from about 2008? Assuming it's OOW. The old days of LMR when they were in George were dreadful. Apparently the branch in CT (Montague Gardens?) is a lot better.

Maitland - Freeway Park.

No, they not any better - trust me - I know from experience.

I haven't dealt with them personally at the Maitland branch, but I know someone (PostmanPot I think it was) who took something there recently and was impressed with the service. Maybe he was just having a lucky day :)

Yes it is from 2008. Thanks for the replies guys. Will see what both of them have to say and take it from there.

Strangely enough I actually fixed the GF's DV2500 over the weekend using the oven trick. Watched a simple 5 min YouTube video to make sure I disassemble it and another 5 min one to make sure I assembled it right. Popped it in the oven after removing the plastic for 10 mins at 200 deg, left it overnight to cool down properly, assembled it the next morning and now it works fine. (Just make sure you get rid of the HP Cooling pad things and replace it with Thermal Grease)

Had it been in warranty though, I'd have taken it to a repair center, but she already got a new laptop and didn't want to pay to get it fixed, so we just went for it and it worked.

Oven trick should work if done right, else if you into repairs invest in a hot air station.
Saved me from many problems, and works great on rrod xbox's ;)

To be honest I was thinking of doing it myself using the oven trick. Just was not sure what temperature to use.

You say 200° for 10min? Maybe I should give that a try first. Do you place the motherboard in the oven as is? Everything removed that can be removed? One more thing, do i place the motherboard in the oven when the oven is still cold or with it preheated?

Add a chicken so you can have a nice roast when you're done.

If you dont know how then dont do it.
Reflowing any board should be done with caution.
But if you dont give a damn, then by all means go ahead & post your vids on youtube for us to view :)

Out of warranty = BASE
In warranty = LMR

(Yes, was very scared of LMR after gdiza's thread, but I received very good service, probably because there were very few people there when I went.)

^^ This.

As I said, the warranty was 12 months gone and a new laptop was bought. Decided to try it for the sake of it.

But yes, 200 degrees C for 10 mins should do the trick (Pre-heated oven). Just make sure you remove all the plastic (including the big black streaks) and the heatsink that covers the CPU and fan and remove the CPU of course.

Then just put it on a baking tray, lifting the side that dips down a bit with foil balls and put it in the middle. I'd also advise putting a small coin on the VGA chip to make sure it sets correctly. I used a penny that I had lying around from England, but 20c or 5c should do the trick..
