My wife and I are moving to Norway at the end of the month and one of the stipulations from the wife is that I set something up to record her favourite show (7de Laan). I have an HP Microserver and from this thread I thought I would purchase http://www.takealot.com/geewiz-easycap-usb-video-capture-card/PLID32832231 and then install mythubuntu.

My questions:
1. Has anyone set this up and then set up a cron to record shows at a specific time?
2. Is it possible to set it up to record a channel that is not being watched?

Remember DSTV encrypts the video outputs, so you'll also need something like grex (or hdfury in case of HDMI)

Are You sure? is this only on HDMI?

I still have a tivo setup using RCA and it records wtihout a problem

Why would you need DSTV to be able to do this? Get a VCR or something and get it from SABC.

Yes a long time ago, you don't need a cron job, if you can find a working EPG for DSTV myth will do it all for you.

If you have std view decorder you have be "watching" that channel.

It is a huge hassle to get it working properly. Also how are you going to get the "recorded" show from your microserver to Norway. Mythtv will encrypt it so it is only viewable on your mythtv "lan"

Why not use Windows Media Center? If Windows recognizes your tuner you can easily schedule a recording (even without EPG) from over the air channels like SABC or ETV.

You should just tell your wife that it cant be done, because you know you are going to be the one stuck watching 7de laan with her. And that should be avoided at all costs.

From my research it seemed like one can use RCA outputs and avoid the encryption.

Got some large disks in the microserver and when my wife visits SA she can catch up. DSTV because my in-laws have DSTV and so it makes it simple.

The Xtreamer is a bit pricey, so I will probably go the route of mythubuntu and see if I can get it all set up. Not a big Windows fan and I don't have a Windows iso lying around.

I haven't captured video for a few years now, but at some point DSTV enabled Macrovision on the RCA outputs of some decoders. I had to swap my DSD1100 (I think) for an older DSD990 (I think), to get around it.
I was using Window Media Center with hauppauge TV card.

I had the same issue. The DSD990 did not have any encryption on the RCA outputs so I also had to buy one to work properly with Windows Media Centre. I wrote a guide on setting up Windows 7 Media Centre with DSTV using a Hauppauge card on mceguide.co.za but that forum has since disappeared. Might have helped the OP.

For what it's worth. 7de laan actually seems to be on dstv catch up so your misses can probably catch the latest episodes online through dstv site. You just need to use your premium subscription which as you mentioned your in laws have

AFAIK the DSTV decoder itself encodes the recording and you need a valid subscription card in the box to play it back. If you had a Dreambox, say, with an Irdeto cam there is no media encryption.

Does the DSTV site employ geolocation to prevent their material being viewed from abroad?

Ah, ok, so this Xstreamer sits between the TV and the DSTV decoder and records the HDMI stream?
Now you have someone babysit the decoder and to upload regular files somewhere.
