Hi all, I sent a mail to HP last week and got a response that they will come back in 24 hours but today is 3 working days later and no reply yet. The warranty is expired.
I am hoping some of you may know of a cure?
The model is a HP Compaq NW 8240 Mobile Workstation.
The keyboard & mouse dies when Windows XP starts.
I have to log in by hitting Control/Alt/Del but get no response from the keyboard or the mouse.
It works perfectly in the BIOS and in diagnostic software.
Any ideas

You could try running Window repair from the installation disk. This should reinstall the drivers loaded by Windows for your keyboard and mouse. You could also try running Windows in safe mode to see if there is a process or program that is malfunctioning. If your keyboard works in safe mode, chances are there is something being loaded by XP that is conflicting with your hardware.

I did do the Windows repair and it stopped again at the "Ctrl Alt Del" screen.
Interesting though I could not enter the product key as the keyboard did not work.

In Safe Mode the problem is the same, do you think that a clean install may work?

Off-topic: my HP Notebook cannot maintain an Internet connection when on WinXP Pro SP3 + PC Suite via BT/USB on my Nokia E63. The same setup sees me having instant internet on any Linux distro. Driver issue or does XP and Linux manage power to USB ports differently?

On my nx6110 I also had some issues with SP3 but I cannot remember what they were. Laptop just runs linux all the time and it works well.

Worth a try. Do you need XP for any specific reasons? I have a HP of similar age and it just runs linux all the time.

I would think that the power to the USB would be independent from the OS and controlled by the system bus.

Have you tried an external keyboard? HP notebook keyboards..... I had a similar issue and only use external devices. I even removed the internal keyboard's cable.

My laptop had a similar issue as yours and worked fine on Linux but not even after a format and fresh install from XP SP3. So mine had to be a software issue. I even downloaded new firmware/drivers for XP but even that did not help.

Linux is now what I'm using. It doesn't call for drivers and everything just works. The WinXP issues never were resolved.

On some machines one apparently can set power levels to USB. That is according to a young qualified technician as well as someone using a Samsung 500 series i5 with Win 7 Pro 64 on it.

The external mouse works but not the keyboard.

Mine is an old NX9010 and Ubuntu 11.04 on it. Sweet solution. With Win XP, had all my days with random hardware issues. Almost discarded the old lappy. Linux is doing it proud and the onlu thing not working is the fax modem which I don't require anyhow.

Will that software run in a Linux session through WINE perhaps?

I have seen "super USB" that gives higher power through the USB 2 ports but this is for charging I-phone's as far as I can gather and I have no idea how it is achieved.

I have no idea. I tried working with Linux a few years ago but gave it up as some software that I needed would not work.

No way it is USB power issue, as keyboard takes very little power.

Sticky Windows key? As long unused scan codes are ignored, by example in BIOS setup, keyboard might appear to work properly. In such case if you disconnect internal keyboard plug, external keyboard should work properly. Easier for checking is to run diagnostic program for scan codes.

Interesting Junky, how would I run this diagnostic program?
