Hi there, Some time ago I bought the HP Pavilion dv6920ei Entertainment Notebook PC from someone 2nd hand, Unfortunately the OS Windows 7 Ultimate is not genuine but I do have a genuine Windows XP Pro Initially the laptop came with Vista Premium but there again it was unexplainable as to why I could not get the disc as the Laptop was loaded with Vista and also the recovery disc etc the guy was so full of excuses....Now my question is:

Can I reformat the drive and load Windows XP Pro? Bearing in mind I'm now down grading as I cannot afford Windows 7 Ultimate I do understand that if possible I would have to down load drivers from HP Site...Thank you

yes. When shipped new, the laptop never had a windows disc. It had a recovery partition - most likely now wiped. Also had two physical hard drives. And overheating problems :)

And weak lid hinges :p

The Laptop I must admit has done me good service but now I'm looking for a 2nd ;-)

Mmm I did see that some time ago...maybe we can claim for a new one lol ;-)

My fix for the couple that have passed across my workbench is to throttle the cpu setting down to 50% capacity (in Vista / win7 - can't be done in XP). This at least stops the things from crashing on warm days. No way you can game or video edit on one of them though.

Yeah my pavilion dv7 gets really hot as well, makes it very uncomfortable to type on cause all this heat just comes from the keyboard. Something I did notice though was that in Ubuntu I didn't have this issue cause the fan would speed up much more than in Windows, I'm starting to think Windows just doesn't manage the fan speed properly.

I do agree maybe we can get them for 2nd degree burns lol (Just kidding) but yes it does get hot, are they all like this?

when the dv series was still current HP released a bios update for the overheating problems. All it did was increase the fan speed. So they knew about the problem. It is a result of some bright spark designer linking the cpu and the gpu with a copper heatpipe bridge, then having a remote heatsink and remote fan for the two chips. Bad design basically. The chips just can't dissipate the heat. Moreover, they send their heat to each other via the shared heat pipe.

Thanks now at Least I don't imagine the key pad gets so hot and it's not just this particular Laptop in front of me... in terms of HP's bright spark linking the cpu and the gpu, it's seems natural to burn ourselves from the excessive heat...Who needs a heater in Winter?

Is the Vista Licence sticker still on the bottom of the laptop? You could just download the Vista version you need and install using the licence sticker.

Or you could just install Ubuntu! :D Ubuntu Rocks!

Hello there Garyvdh, Long time no see or chat how you doing mate?...I still have the licence under the Laptop Does it have to be the same version installed?

Thanks ponder for the help I agree no point in loading Win XP pro I'm spoilt now lol

Can anyone tell me what original OS came with the HP Pavilion dv6920ei Entertainment Notebook PC? because I'm limited to data and would not like to find that I have downloaded the wrong OS version thanks!

Should say what version on the sticker. Probably Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
