HP ProLiant MicroServer

I am still extremely nervous about the performance of the N40L... I have been humming and haring about whether or not to get one to replace my current HTPC (Pentium 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, cheapie-nvida card etc.). I would probably feel more comfortable with the N54L but this link makes me scared:

The PC as is works fine, BUT HD media seems to have quite a bit of jitter. Series is still fine, but watching an actual movie brings back memories of YouTube on 384k - watch a little, buffer a little...

You all seem quite confident in the machine, but just for the sake of setting my mind at ease:
Would the machine run fine (HD Media especially - especially very large files) with Win7 64bit, XBMC, SAB, SB, CP - all running at the same time? Is Win Home Server not maybe a better option? Lighter on resources?

Would definitely look at dedi graphics - need to hook up to the TV via HDMI for audio and video - GT610 seems to be a firm favourite, so I will follow suit.

Dude I've run 24gb 1080P Bluray rips through the thing without it even blinking.

This while running SAB, SB, CP, HP and a number of other things.

I do have 4gb memory though, but It hardly uses any of it.

No need to worry about the decoding since the video card handles all of that and my 5450 Is the Ati equivalent of the GT610 you want.

You okes building xeon servers getting electricity on the cheap someplace?

He needs a dual Xeon server setup because his media needs to be re-converted for each device in realtime (He's using Plex)

:p

You not wrong dude. But not everything needs to be transcoded. Most devices play straight. Just some of the DLNA clients need a bit of help sometimes.

And hey... It's a quad :D

I am actually torn between an ATI and NVIDIA card, I have always been a fan of ATI...Just more worried about compatibility later on because I am not entirely sure whether I am going the Windows or Linux route... eish, so much to think about.

I would up the RAM on the machine anyway though, the current 2GB is fine in my current system, but I often see that it runs a bit lean. Now I just need to get the damn HP already :p or the components to roll my own... I think I need to give this some more thought.

My Xeon E3-1230 uses 5% less power than my i7-3770.
They not so bad :)

Pitty you are on the other side of the country... I still have an old Dell Poweredge server sitting in storage. Nothing to write home about, since it is nowhere near new - but sounds like you could have some kind of use for it.

It is power hungry though. And sounds like a vacuum cleaner when it starts up.

I also have one that sits around doing nothing because of its power consumption, noise and no llinux support, I have 2 microservers now and I'm happy with them.

Thanks dude. Appreciate the gesture :)

I also have an old Xeon machine and don't use it purely because of the noise and power consumption.
Freaking thing is big and heavy. Going to flog it off somewhere me thinks. Was good in it's day though.

Primary reason why mine is still in storage and hasn't found it's way to the tech-cemetery... Damn thing weighs between 30-40kg's IIRC.

Well, the weight the fact that I just don't have the heart to send it anywhere unless it's a good home for it.

Some random pics I found online of the PE2600/compoents:

ooohhhh, pick me!! Pick me!!!
I'll give it a good home. :D

Dammit ... you're in CPT.

No need to be nervous... I have the lower model... I think it's the N30L and it plays everything flawlessly.

Honestly I don't think it makes much difference for these purposes.

My own system runs a 5450 with OpenELEC.

Recently built a Windows 8 version for my sister with GT610 and it runs just fine as well.

So, i am having constant issues with the network on my N36L.
The network just kind of locks up for a few seconds, but its enough to make the media player lose connection and go back to the home screen.

Anyone know of a fix for this?

Haha yeah, unfortunate. I have this urge to start the machine up now... Maybe later. :erm:

Thanks to both of you... At least now I have two people to blame if it doesn't work out :D

Dammit just discovered that the N40L cant play 1080P 3D movies... (CPU0:100% and CPU1:10%) lags like a bitch when the 3D starts getting intense! using a ATI 5450 4GB ram openelec 2.0.0

Yes it can, you didn't enable hardware acceleration, seeing as one of the CPU cores sits at 100%

Sweet sweet sweet Tanks dude dint think it would've made a difference :) just enabled everything that said enable hardware

Hey all, I've moved the wiki over to http://www.myhtpc.co.za/hpwiki and I'm now using dokuwiki as I was just not able to secure the other one from annoying spammers. I have removed the old wiki completely and just moved the content over. Please feel free to add and edit what you want, I had to add some spam checks so with edits and account creation you will have to enter a recaptcha. If you do register an account though you won't have to put a recaptcha in everytime.

Cheers! Here is the link again: http://myhtpc.co.za/hpwiki/
