HP ProLiant MicroServer

You've obviously turned on all the settings after your install? I just switch everything on.

Are you using a password?

Does the browser based remote work ip:port?

Yep, samba is enabled, with no passwords. Everything else works normally...ssh, remote control via web etc. Bloody wierd. I've asked for help on the openelec forum - hopefully someone there can make sense of it...

Cheers
Ian

Hmmm. So under openelec os settings samba is enabled to start on boot. Under system settings everything default, workgroup name.

And you've never used any custom settings files e.g. advancedsettings.xml?

Have you tried formatting the installation completely and then installing 3.0 it's possible that some of the settings files are not being overwritten and are interfering with 3.0

Yip.. Did a new install off USB of 3.0 and 3.1(which formats the install drive), and both give this issue. The same clean install off USB of 2.0 gives a working samba...

I'm hoping a bright spark on the openelec forum can sort it out. I'm clueless when it comes to Linux, which doesn't help :(

So I have weened myself off the HP Micro server. Picked up a Raspberry PI and its doing everything the media center did. I would say boot time is actually better. Streaming all content off my PC which is on 24/7 so no need for storage on the device. The cherry on the top my TV remote works for XBMC through the HDMI cable, So one less remote. Playback is also good 8GB Rip 1080p running smoothly with cpu peaking at about 80%. I would not recommend additional services though eg: downloads (sabnzb, couch potatoe etc) Might have performance issues then.

Edit: Will be picking up a second device for the bedroom Monday, I am very impressed so far.

What was the total cost and components required?

Which version of XBMC are you running?
I see that there is now an OPENELEC version for the Raspberry PI

1 x Case
1 x Raspberry PI Model b 512mb
1 x PSU
1 x USB Cable
Total R 735.25 inc VAT

Edit: you need a SD card as well I had one lying around.

Purchased from Automation Techniques in Durbs they are in CPT and JHB.

I used Raspbmc as the xbmc distro as it had the chance of my TV remote working. I dont think openelec can do that. Openelec however is apparently a little bit snappier, but to be honest raspbmc feels fine to me.

Edit: My microserver was struck by lightning and they wanted R5999.00 ex vat for replacement mobo. It cost me about 1.8k with 4GB Ram and a Geforce 520 GTS brand new WTF. So for me this is pure win.... Going to get a second for my bedroom next week.

I firstly would like to apologise if this has been asked and answered already. I have searched the web high and low, but to no avail.

I am looking at setting up a remote connection to my Openelec system, I know how to setup the port forwarding on the router itself, but my question is. With no-ip you have to install a program which updates your IP address automatically with there servers. I tried downloading a few of these programs (repositories). But errors - now correct structure or does not meet the needs (or something like that)

Can someone perhaps provide me with a link for this download. PLEASE !

Just register for a free dyndns account and set it up on your router.

Depends all on which router you have. Not all routers support this and many support more than only DynDNS including no-ip.

@craigdoepie: Do you have any other computers on the network? If so just install the software on one of them or as Sinbad suggests check if your router supports this feature, my TP-Link has the option for a few of these dynamic DNS services including no-ip.

I understand the setting up on the router, but if I am not mistaken. We as normal people don't have fixed IP's with the ISP. So if it changes it won't update on the no-ip server. Just thought I could install the add-on on Openelec for the udpate to happen automatically

@DOC, I do have another PC, but that PC does is not on all the time. But I guess that is the easier and better option and think that is the best route.

The router automatically sends the update to the dynamic dns server when your IP address changes.

As Sinbad says, if your router has this feature:

The router automatically sends the update to the dynamic dns server when your IP address changes.

Also your IP shouldn't change that regularly, so having the no-ip software on the other PC should be fine but it would be a lot more convenient having it done on the router.
