Shew, okay, sounds like a pain in the butt. Have you found the latest firmware?
I suppose there is a danger in trying to upgrade firmware while there are drive detection issues. It may just kill the drive if it fails during update.

Buy separate SATA and power cables.

The Sata to Molex power connector can be 15cm long but the Sata Data to MB connector needs to be 1 metre.

I bought a 40cm combination cable which although was fine for power was far to short for data because of the route the cable takes in the box.

Thanks, picked it up already, so I'll have a look tonight at what I've got in my cupboard and if nothing works I'll go buy what I need tomorrow. Busy installing OS via USB now.

I can confirm that the 4GB Adata DDR3 1333mhz memory works fine. Installed two of them just now.
 
Never used the HDD's that came with mine, both boot from USB drives, they have been relegated to paperweight status from day 1.

Finally got my HP up and running as a media center.

Using Crunchbang Waldorf as an OS with XBMC as I couldn't get the correct resolution using XBMCbuntu on my LG 37" HDTV.

SABnzbd, Sickbeard and Couchpotato all setup as well.

2.5 " drives in Optical Drive bay ?

OK -- so I succumbed and got a 54L on Esquire special :)

I am sure this question has been asked and answered -- it has been a long hard week that is not finished yet.

I have had a quick look in the Wikis but did not find a definitive answer ......

What I would like to do is install two 2.5" drives in the space where the 5.25 optical drive goes.

I notice ONE molex power connector but no SATA cable
I am sure one can get a molex to two sata adaptor for the power but what does one do for the SATA data connection to two drives ?

I do not need a hot swap raid type cage adapter just something that fill fit in the 5.25 space and allow you to connect two 2.5" HDD's
( I will probably use one 60GB SSD for the OS and another standard drive to install applications and use the four 3.5" HDD's for Data RAID. )

How does one go about this and what exactly is needed ? ( and is it available in SA )

I was thinking of installing MS Server 2008 R2 as the OS and MS SQL 2012 as the one and only app. I thought I might be able to make a mini geodatabase server ( few users and low load )

Suggestions most welcome

What I did was to route the eSata from the back of the machine, back into the machine to where you want the additional drive. You just need to buy an eSata->Sata cable.

Was wanting to keep everything internal ( and use the SATA connection on MB for the 2.5"drives )
Was hoping that there was some sort of a "cage"that would allow you to do this ?
Was going to use the eSATA for something else.

BTW ; where can one get eSATA cables ? tried local shops ( but all out of luck and full of ignorance )
 
Something I've been wondering about.. is there away to add another box which basically just pure CPU grunt + ram and maybe a small OS drive/flash for vsphere? does a product like that exist? *curious* because then you could add like a CPU intensive system for just heavy livfting vm's and leave all the data on the more efficient micro hp, turning off and on the other one when needed? like with vsphere
