HP ProLiant MicroServer

Thanks for the advice.

I'm trying to source a silent card but if all else fails I will just get the one from Kalahari. Esquire does not have stock of the ASUS Silent card.

I added an extra Kingston 2GB RAM to my basket at Esquire. Had a quick read and non-ECC RAM should be fine according to the links I found. Correct?

Hoping somebody can give me good advice and perhaps a link to a simple but reliable wireless card or adapter. Want to order everything at once.

Look, it's not a bad thing to get the one with the fan on - the Microserver only has 2x fans, 1x of which is actually responsible for cooling the Microserver. I have seen that mine does get a bit toasty at times.

Non-ECC RAM - also shouldn't be a problem, I got a good deal at the time so just purchased a module identical to the factory fitted one. Not sure if there will be any issues with running an ECC and non-ECC at the same time.

What area are you in btw?

I am in Menlyn area, Pretoria.

My main concern is if the one with the fan does not fit. Nit looking forward to modding or exchanges.

usually the ones with fans are the ones that fit
the ones with heatsinks are usually to big and need to be modded

im running a fan version, and cant hear it running

I somehow think the coolers are the same size hey - the majory difference AFAIK is that the silent is a solid block, the one with the fan is hollowed out to make room to fit the fan.

My one looks a lot like the one on the right:

My one clears the chassis by like 2mm :p I also heard before that I was lucky to get it in, but I think they changed the design at some point. For example, the ASUS GT210 doesn't fit at all - at least not the silent one. I now have one lying around here collecting dust.

Ah okay. Thanks guys.

Now just to find a solution to the WiFi... Then I will be starting my setup tomorrow evening.

1. Card should be fine - I have the same one, just the silent one (I.e. no fan)

2. I just added another 2GB - so 4GB in total. If you have the budget, definitely worth getting a second 2GB module

3. No idea on this one - sorry man - I got myself a netgear WNA1000M to use on my desktop, but not overly impressed with the speed. Browsing and general use is fine, but data transfer rates aren't so hot. Hopefully someone else can suggest a better option.

On point 2. What and where did you get the extra 2GB stick from?

Ive used both the "Intellinet Wireless Nano 150N USB Adapter" and a Asus 300N one on my micro servers running Linux Mint.

You should have no issues with windows.

I'm running the asus 210 silent cards and had to break some fins off the heatsink so it would fit.

Just ordered a N54L from Esquire.... let the media centre fun begin :)

How loud are the fans on the N54L? Will I hear them at night if I stick the server in the top cupboard of my built in cupboards?

They are very quiet. Well, until the Psu fan starts dying.

Everything ordered and paid on my side.

N54L
2GB Extra RAM
Network Card for Wifi
Graphics card from Kalahari.

Hoping to collect the first three components from Esquire later today and get everything up and running via a normal monitor. And then just connect to my TV when the graphics card arrives.

What did the stick of RAM cost?

May I ask why you purchased a PCI wireless card , you should have taken a Wireless USB dongle as you going to use that slot for the graphics card , You could have also purchased the vga card from Esquire and also a HDMi cable

Aaaargh fokkit! That is why I asked here.

Erm. Any way to swop the card for a dongle? Not bothered about losing the difference in price.

Only reason I bought the graphics card from Kalahari is because I had e-bucks to blow and you also don't have stock of the ASUS 5450 card I was looking at.

I have 4 HDMI cables at home. Have been linking my laptop to PC for watching series for a long time now. Decided to go the HTPC route after cancelling DSTV.
