HP ProLiant MicroServer

Hey guys. The USB wifi dongle I was using in my N54L died over the weekend. Since then I've tried connecting via ethernet and it appears there's a BIOS issue with the N54L ethernet and Windows 10?

I've tried to make a USB key to update the BIOS using HPQUSB.exe but it keeps failing with the error "Unable to format the device" with both my Sandisk 16GB and 8GB flash disks.

Any ideas?

I've had the same issue. Can't remember what I did to fix it though.

As I recall you can't make the flash drive on Windows 10.

Try it on older OS. Best bet probably 7.

I owe you a case of beers! Installed WinXP on a VM, and it worked like a charm.

Glad my memory wasn't dodgy then.

Took me an entire night of ****ing around and reinstalling on the same box for lack of another to make the bloody thing work.

Guys,

This morning I installed an Asus Xonar DGX sound card alongside a HD6450 Graphics card. Windows 10 immediately threw its toys out the cot and it said F*** you and removed the onboard network card and the sound card once I got the sound card driver installed. Now I am left with device manager telling me that a PCI Express root port cannot start (code 10)..

Anyone come across this yet..?

Dude, I have almost that. I suspect it is a win10 update that breaks the PCI Express bus, I have a n36l with that exact Asus card and a GeForce 210 that has worked for years, recently my sound is gone. Network stopped working and a reboot got that fixed but my sound is still gone.

At least that rules out hardware failure!

Have you updated the BIOS?

As far as I can tell, according to HP website I am on the latest BIOS version.. I may be wrong because I HATE HATE the HP website and finding anything on it is a massive pain.. Server reports as 2013.1.10 or 2013.10.1 which is in line with the HP website..

Yeah that's the BIOS version I recently updated to. It fixed my issue with Windows 10 and the built-in Ethernet adapter. Sorry can't help out with the sound card. Good luck with the troubleshooting.

do you have windows 10 running on it..?

The old Bios had issues with Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 and later operating systems. Your Ethernet would not have worked without that Bios update.

WAslayer, my setup was running fine (Win10, Kodi, Asus Xonar, onboard Ethernet, GeForce 210) and last week when I turned it on my network and sound did not work. I removed the network device from Device Manager and rebooted, that got the network back up.

However my sound is gone (the soundcard does not detect) and I have a PCI Express Root device that cannot start.

Smoking gun is a recent Win10 update.

strange thing is, i installed the sound card and booted the machine.. immediately had issues with the network card where it had detected the sound card and somehow it saw 2 network adapters and i could not get the network adapter to get an ip from the dhcp server.. i tried uninstalling the nic, which just hung.. forced power down, booted back into windows and everything was fine.. installed the latest driver for the sound card from the asus website and rebooted.. network was fine after reboot and i opened up the asus sound control panel to test for sound etc, nothing.. device manager said installed and working fine etc.. rebooted, all of a sudden a windows update gets installed.. once rebooted, nic and sound card missing and the pci express root error.. i uninstalled all updates that windows allowed me to uninstall and still no luck..

ultimately had to roll back to previous build, in my case before the anniversary update.. windows broke the chipset in the latest build somehow.. hoping it gets fixed before the machine decides to update again..
