HP ProLiant MicroServer

Sorry, didn't structure my question fully or properly. I know that the first 3 will run, and I assime being a server edition, MySQL, Apache, FTP and SSH will work ... my main question, is for personal use and wanting minimal intervention ... how will it compare to my currently running Ubuntu Server.

My largest problem with Ubuntu Server is troubleshooting issues which takes me forever as I research, and also, my mom would never in a million years be able to even get it to switch on when there is a startup issue (such as my raid issue) so that she can watch her movies.

There are a couple of minor - and well-documented - gotchas on setting up raid as part of WHS2011, but other than that all should work fine.

There is also a free add-in - Home Server SMART 2013 - that will provide you with a daily SMART report (via email) on the WHS's disks. By sending the report to yourself you'll have a simple monitoring system.

I have been looking at this as a viable home server option. I am currently kinda new to this but I am here to ask a few questions which I get conflicting answers when doing normal research about it.

So firstly I guess a little background on me, I am a cs master student so naturally I want to keep my code on it (my project code is becoming quite big). I was wondering if I could just use is as a server for hosting my code (I am using github but I would like to move to my own hosted solution)

I would also like to run a torrent/nzb client on the box as well for obvious reasons

I would also like to run a media server on it, I have a PS3 that can be used to fetch content if need be.

And lastly I would like to run it in RAID 1 is this possible?

Now since I am on Afrihost business I am aware that they are soon going to launch static IPs which would be really easy for me to access my box from anywhere (like uni) however I think that dydns will suffice for now.

Now to me this product looks good, however I am wondering if it would be easier or more cheap if i just get a mini-ATX case and buy parts for it instead of buying this? Any insight here? thanks

Esquire has a pretty good special on at the moment for the server with everything you'd need, but once that special finishes the price is gonna go up quite a bit, by then it might be better to build your own

I'm going to try and replace the capacitor and see if maybe I'm lucky and nothing else was damaged. If that doesn't work I'm not sure if I want to get another MicroServer, my MS was delegated to serving media only and I think it is a little overpowered for that job. Want to maybe get one of those Android devices and load Plex on it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad to know I can run it as a headless server. I think I will go test it out, cause I'm running the OS off the internal USB port. Will windows fit on a 16GB Flash Drive without issues? Then I'll just swap out the USB's as a I need depending in the OS I feel like :P

Last time I tried, it turned out that windows resets the USB controllers during boot, which screws up the boot process.

Couldn't find a way around this.. ( Was back in the windows XP days, might have changed )

Good luck, the last time I tried replacing a capacitor I learnt about multi-layered pc boards (this was a while ago) my soldering/placing skills aren't good enough for that.

I read about performance issues as well, lets hope for a USB3 port or better yet, embedded SSD in the next model.

I (for one) would be interested to hear of your experiences if you go the Android route. Every review that I have read (thus far) seems to highlight more issues than successes, indicating that it's perhaps early days ... maybe you should try a Pi ? :)

You need to order it online before midnight tonight , thereafter prices goes up to R 1899.00 excl vat , we only have 382 units left out the 1770 units that came two weeks ago , this is now the final stocks that will be available on this model ever.

How do you figure that? In other words, why the price increase? Obviously your price was set based on exchange rate you brought it in at (yes, you got the shipment in two weeks ago but I'm sure you use forward cover). So, if you were making a profit at R1399 on the 1388 units you have sold thus far, how on earth do you justify a 36% increase on the same stock from tomorrow onwards?

The actual cost on these units is R1829.00 excl we used our marketing funds to cost down these units , the rest of the units sold at normal pricing will make up on what was used , we do this all the time with most of the items we cost down, this is very similar to what Retail chain stores do.

Good guy Esquire fighting the SA prices for it's customers. Has anyone noticed how expensive companies like Rectron have become? Their list price is shocking.
