HP ProLiant MicroServer

Busy setting up my third MicroServer now.
Got this one (N54L) at Esquire on the special (R1299 ex)
All mine are configured with Windows 7, XBMC and Plex.
One is for downloading (hooked up to our LCD TV).. that's where we watch movies the most.
The other one is set up to serve movies, and the third to serve TV shows.

The downloading one has a mini wireless mouse and keyboard that stay on the coffee table.
Awesome!

Whats the difference between plex and xbmc?

XBMC sets itself up as a Media sorter and player on a single PC.
But Plex sets itself up as a Media Server as well as a player.
I prefer XBMC's interface and look and feel, but I love Plex's serving abilities.
Any Plex client can see all the shares on the other servers (even if they are over the wireless or internet).
You can even get Plex clients for Android phones that let you watch movies from your Media Servers.
So you can watch your stuff on your tablet or android phone.
Plex compresses the stream on the fly so that it can be viewed on almost any device.

Awesome! Have you ever used XBMC's Upnp protocols?

Can XBMC actually sort folders too or does it only sort in the "program"

I am still copying all my series etc over for my Proliant. Wish Windows and Mac would play nice

edit: Do you NEED to install a HDMI card for XBMC to work? I just want it to serve it will never actually play anything.

I think I enabled them at first, but not everything on my network was working properly with Upnp.
I use Upnp mainly for my Mede8er in the bedroom.
But beyond that I need to really go further in actually sharing the stuff in my libraries so that Upnp will stream it.

No it only sorts in the program.
You can use other external renaming and tagging programs to sort and identify the stuff.

I enabled password sharing and autologon on all my windows computers.
Make sure to also enable 40 bit sharing.
I turned off all homegroups in Windows 7.

Note sure again, but I don't think so.
Should work over your network.

I bought the one on special.
I'm strugeling to find the drivers for motherboard.
Can someone point me to it please?
I find drivers for the N40L and N36L, but nothing for N54L
On the box it says:
hp micro g7 N54L NHP 250GB EU svr

Using server 2008 R2

Is there any reason why you want to use a server OS instead of Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Windows 7 is in most cases just fine... even for serving files, as you long as you add a bit more RAM.

No not really,
Just wanted to learn a bit more about the OS.
It is just running as a file server atm, but even that is not really needed.
It is just a project.
The graphics is on standard VGA and is bugging the hell out of me.
I can't find the flippen drivers for the N54L.
Not sure if it goes under another name or model maybe.

OK, well i can't answer your question about where the drivers are... my guess would be on the HP Website.
But I doubt if that OS is officially supported for any of the Microservers.
My Advice is to go with Windows 7.
All the drivers are natively supported there, and it shares files like a dream.

Does anyone have a different download location for the latest stable release of openelec (3.2.0 generic build) I dont understand how they can build such an awesome system but their server does not support resume downloads...
