HP ProLiant MicroServer

I’m looking for 2x2TB HDDs so let me know if you gonna split

What is the max disk size I can put into the HP Gen8 Microserver?

I just purchased a new Seagate Exos 6TB and it's not being detected. My controller was set to legacy, and I've switched it to AHCI and it's still not detecting the 6TB disk.

EDIT: turns out the Seagate Exos disk is a SAS disk and not a SATA disk, and to run it I need a Host Bus Adapter card. FFS :X3:

My Proliant N36L that I bought in 2010/2011 for R500, is still chugging along.

Running Ubuntu 16.04 Server, with containers for Plex, Ubiquiti Controller, and redundant file backup.
It does struggle a bit with the newer encoding/decoding, so I will probably have to look at something a bit newer in the next year or 3, but for now, I'm still happy with it.

I think the time has come to replace my Gen8 Microserver. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am looking for something with a bit more RAM 32-64GB and also 8-12 bays.

Price and energy consumption as well as noise are all relevant considerations.

I want to run some VMs in my home lab.

I too am still running a Gen8 Microserver which is getting very long in the tooth.

Mine is just running TrueNAS but the two cores or this machine are getting hammered when there is anything remotely taxing on the system.

I'd also like to know what people are recommending these days which has the same form factor but isn't a proprietary NAS platform.

Also interested - but don't think there is a cheap off-the-shelf all-in-one solution any more. I built a custom server a few years back.

I upgraded my Gen8 with a Xeon processor a while ago and it really changed the game for me.

You can buy one of these: E3-1265L V2 for around R1,000. Might give your server another few years.

This chassis looks the most similar for a DIY solution: https://www.firstshop.co.za/product...721tq-250b-132580?_pos=1&_sid=b64f7e57a&_ss=r

But would require you still buy all the components, and micro-ITX motherboards are pricey.
Yeah, I don't really have the time or patience to do that.

With VMWare discontinuing the free version of ESXi I will also need to switch to Proxmox or something similar. It is super annoying. The only real issue I had was the 16Gb memory limit. Other than that, it just works.

My NAS is just the hand-me-downs from my gaming machine. So keep it as an ATX MB, even though there is no need anymore for an ATX board.
