What version of freenas are you using? For version 7 there are a few good guides out there like these sabnzb , sickbeard , couch potatoe

All of them based on the guides at www.ainer.org which people can use if they're running ubuntu or pretty much any other linux debian based distro

Version 8 of Freenas doesn't allow add-ons yet, that will be released in 8.1. There are hacks to allow sabnzb and that but I'd just use 7 until 8.1 is out if I was you.

After I have added a 1x 500gb sata, 1x 2TB sata, Blu Ray drive and low profile gpu discussed in this forum.
Will the psu support all of the above for an HTPC?

I went to site and downloaded the latest, so assume that would be 8.....I will go back and download the last 7 update then and go from there.
Thanks kindly for linkies, shall have a look see at them as well :)

what are some of you running in terms of 1080p streaming?

see guys mentioning the 5450's, but how do they run?

would something higher like THIS be better and would it even run?

this would be used on a 50" for media and some basic browsing.

The issue is the tight space restriction within the HP MS. Ensure the card you are looking at has been successfully installed by someone before you purchase it.

Yeah you can't just purchase any card.

The card needs to have a low-profile bracket included, but importantly: A single slot low-profile bracket, otherwise it also won't fit (Eg I saw an ASUS 5450 with only a dual-slot LP bracket, wouldn't have worked.)
Secondly, the PCI-E slot can only deliver 25w (odd) power to the card, so you need to buy a card that uses little power - again the 5450 comes in with a perfect score.

Bought two Sapphire 5450's yesterday from PostManPot, they have everything exactly as you need it.

Thanks Frag, glad you are happy. Perfect little cards!

I'm running the 5450 fine on HD content... I'll check tonight how it handles a 24GB HD file... but don't think it'll struggle.

during the wait, I decided to start up my little n36l, after the dedicated download laptop I was using finally gave up the ghost.

Inspired by yeti's post, I started up my rig, from where I last left it.

My Vsphere install still perfect on the usb stick - along with my ubuntu and SBS Essentials 2011 Vm's still functioning.

Installed sabnzb and it's currently doing some of my downloads. - will probably redo the entire setup again, once I get more info.

But for now for a nice little start it's gr8, I am even able to monitor the health and snapshots of my vm's via my ipad - so I am enjoying the intergration between the toys.

Also busy installing a WHS2011 test VM as I post this from my Ubuntu VM.

I'm looking at getting one of these for a home lamp / file server running fedora or ubuntu server.
Is anyone else running this type of config and what is the performance like this server?

Where can I get hold of one of these in Pretoria?

Really cannot get over how awesome these little units are! Just want to get another one and another one!

Does anyone know if the Gigabyte GV-R545D2-512D "ATI Radeon HD5450 Silence 512MB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video" card would fit in the Microserver? Has anyone tried this particular version of the 5450?

Also, what kind of price would I be looking at... local suppliers in JHB?

Thanks

Yeah, if you MUST install freenas DO NOT USE version 8, it is utter GARBAGE! Use version 7. Or an even better plan just load Ubuntu with Webmin and save yourself many headaches. FREENAS 8 = FAIL!

Does it have a DVI + HDMI single slot low profile bracket?

Does it have a half-the-height of a single slot heat sink?

Then yes, it'll fit.

Think I'm rather gonna go for the Saphire as that is known to fit. :)

As soon as the gf lets me close to anything electronic again I plan to get stuck in again with FreeNas 7
Cant recall if it was sorted but Im sure somewhere along the line here someone was having problems with the HD5450 and Ubuntu?

Wow Deja vu

I've encountered no issues with FreeNAS 8.

That said, I have nothing else running on that VM and I have added no customizations (or hacks until it supports extensions).
