OK, so if I can summarise we have two choices here for cards with:

1. low enough power consumption for the 25W max and
2. with the best possible HD playback power and
3. including HDMI audio and
4. confirmation on this forum it'll fit in the HP MS.

These are:

1. GT520 - XBMCLive - Point of View - http://www.pointofview-online.com/showroom.php?shop_mode=product_detail&product_id=248

Have I got it right? Got a HP MS sitting on my desk begging for a card and I want to pick up some more from postmanpot. But I need to get the GPU sorted.

Got my Sapphire5450 from Postmanpot today. Fits perfectly and excelent video quality. I'm currently watching a 24gb MKV of Avatar and earlier watched 16gb Transformers 1, both play perfect, smooth with vivid picture on 40inch Samsung @ 1080p.

The MSI GT220 also fits.

Not much :) ... Installed 11.04 this evening and then followed the Ubuntu guide on install the proprietary ATI drivers, rebooted and sound was working through the HDMI cable. Now just installing XBMC. I know 11.04 only has an unstable release but just testing things and will install 10.04 on my machine this weekend instead.

(The ATI drivers is a 70MB download:

I got that far - but couldn't get hardware acceleration working in XBMC.
 
Ai ATi & XBMC & linux don't always likey each other.

Someone PM me what they can sell me a HD5450 and HD6450. I can purchase from suppliers but sometimes 2nd hand/other people's sources are cheaper.

I'm battling with XBMC on Windows (XP, have not tried Win7 yet).

Playing a 264 1080p 22GB Avatar file (seems to be the reference movie to test HD playback), I get more video stuttering on XBMC-Win(XP) than on XBMC-Live on the same hardware (oldish dual-core PC with GT220).

Which in turn is not as smooth as streaming the same file to my PS3 via 'PS3 Media Server' which is currently me reference setup to test HD playback. (I suspect without a reference system, some glitches on the smaller cards might go unoticed, but once you know about them, you're stuffed! :))

So, I'm not keen to go Windows, but then the stupid Radeon problem pops up with 'Live.

What to do? Seems the answer is to get the best posible Nvidia card within the power limitations? The 520?
 
Jannie - press o while its playing to see if its using the gfx or cpu. I read somewhere about a problem with some setups on XP and XBMC... much like the ATi problem on XBMC Live.

On my unit I had to enable hardware acceleration myself (It was disabled by default) before it would play smoothly. If you know someone coming to this neck of the woods that can bring it with, I'd be happy to set it up for you if you are tired of struggling.

Messugga, tx for the hint on checking the acceleration, will for sure check it out. Is it a Win-XP or XBMC setting?

xrapidx, under the 'O' option, which bit tells me if HW acceleration is on?


I'm quite keen to do a flash-boot 'Live install. Like the idea of a Window-less installation, just like my UnRAID NAS.

I'll get a 6450 to test under Windows but am now looking for a 520. And, of course, now can't find anyone in Cpt with stock. Esquire don't have any of the Point of View ones.

Any mountain goats that might know who else are selling these? (520, LP)

No problemo. It's a XBMC setting. I run XBMC Live so my settings are slightly different to yours, but have a look here. I see mention of that option not being available under certain version of Windows.

From the official XBMC wiki: "Hardware video decoding via DirectX Video Acceleration [70][71] is now supported although this enhancement currently only runs on Windows Vista and Windows 7 due to the author's currently using the DXVA 2.0 API which is not supported in Windows XP.[72]", so it seems you're out of luck if you want to use XBMC on Windows XP. That being said, Windows 7 scales excellently and runs fine on even Atom-powered netbooks, so although performance won't be stellar on the MicroServer, it would be an easy solution should you insist on going the ATI route.

If, however, you insist on using XP, this is an option for you. Personally, I don't like hack jobs like this and would prefer to avoid it if possible.

Ps. The GPU I purchased from Prophecy is as follows:
1 x Innovision N210-1DDV-C3BX NVIDIA GeForce GT210 512MB DDR3 64-bit A43_N210-1DDV-C3BX R338.13 R385.47 R385.47
It doesn't come with a LP back plate, but that's not a big deal to get around.

There seems to be some conflict as to whether or not the Sapphire 6450 GddR3 actually comes with the low profile bracket. Can someone confirm this? Someone with first hand experience that is.

Also suggestions for a supplier - pref - cape town.
