HP ProLiant MicroServer

We can use MediaWiki, http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

I can host it if you don't find any free hosting. Or maybe rpm can add a wiki option to the forum.

I PM'd rpm last night, we'll wait and see what he says! I see there is a mediawiki bridge to use vbulletin's user database! That would ideal, if not we'll just host it somewhere else!
Will let you guys know when he responds!

Ok, for now I will be using my Point of view g210, however it doesn't have a low profile bracket so I will have to just have to wangle it in without a bracket for now.

I want to however get a card that comes with a bracket and also that is cheap, what do you guys recommend?

I see the MSI g210 is being used by a few people as well as the gt520 (however this one is a bit too pricey). Any ideas?

Same here... now any suggestions which server OS to use? WHS 2011? Ubuntu? I have about 4pcs 2macs and a couple of laptops on my current home network... pcs are wired with gigabit network, and I have WiFi for the laptops, macs and tablets...

If it's going to be a fileserver go for either Freenas,Unraid or WHS depending on your preference.

With linux in general don't use NTFS as your filesystem! It works but performance will lag and you'll end up getting slow transfer speeds and wondering why..

I did the same yesterday :) . He replied and said that they tried it before and it didn't work out.. So unfortunately we have to find another solution.

I currently only have intl hosts, but I'll see if I can get a local host.. any suggestions ?

I'll check hetzner, WA, & Cybersmart..

Hetzner seems quite reasonable. Guess a domain is still needed too. What traffic do you anticipate ?

I've been wanting to get some local webspace and a domain for a while now, I can make some space available for the wiki (it shouldn't use very much). I have an account with WA and their web hosting comes with a free domain!

Suggestions for a domain name?

Also, suggestions for a good wiki backend?

Hmm, okay thats lame. Webafrica's Micro hosting doesn't have mysql or php support, that's just a waste of time. Lemme check somewhere else.

hehe lucky you checked that I signuped an account profile on hetzer while I was on the phone so I didn't read all the features.. Luckily I didn't add any packages to my account..

I have all those features on my godaddy account, but thats international..

Ok, Afrihost has the best value for money account and I have an account with them already.

So, domain name suggestions..

I don't mind hosting a site for a HP MS wiki. I think it's a great idea! Will register a co.za domain if someone thinks of a cool one ;)

Edit: Sorry didn't see your post there timvdwest. Don't want to tread on any toes.

Okay, debate over :D

Seeing I'm using the microserver for my htpc I have registered the domain myhtpc.co.za. Simple and easy to remember.

No prob, going to use the space anyways, but now we have local space and a domain. I will setup a wiki backend tonight sometime and post the details here tomorrow.

Cool, thanks tim.

Will add the final link to my sig, once it's up and running :)

Thank you! Let me know how it fits then I'm getting one too!
@timvdwest Just installed it... fits perfectly, about 5mm clearance between the heatsink and the tray rail. I wanted to take a photo, but you can barely make out anything on the photo. But it fits!

Too bad it only has 512MB memory. Would have preferred a 1GB card.
@ABCpt: How does the amount of RAM influence the graphics? I thought its only for games and such that store textures. Then again, I don't think the CPU is all that great for gaming. Please explain how the memory on a graphics card is used. For something like XMBC, will it really make a difference if you have 512MB or 2GB?

I also bought another Kingston ValueRam KVR1333D3E9S/2G for about R200 and added that to the existing 1GB it came with, and it detects the total memory as 3GB now.

Hope someone can help me. I have a 32GB 2.5" Corsair SSD that I'd like to use, but when I screw it into the drive bracket, the connectors don't line up with the drive cage. The SSD came with a bracket that adapts it to 3.5", but you can cleary see its not going to work either because the connectors still don't line up. I suspect the bracket the SSD came with is simply to enable you to mount in a 3.5" bay and connect a SATA cable.

Does any know where I can either
- find a bracket that converts it to a 3.5" drive with the connectors aligned up properly
OR
- explain where the SATA is for the optical drive (does it come with a SATA cable or do you need to plug in your own? and where is the connector on the mb then?)
Right now, I plugged in the SSD in the cage by just the tension of the connectors, its not supported by anything else.
