HP ProLiant MicroServer

In my case it's another thing that I can only do on saturdays so it's worth a delivery fee for me to get something just "there" at the office. Cybernatic and wootware both have excellent prices on something that's already an excellent deal. Just saying there's little need to go rush out and buy 30 of them for an extra R50 profit (which I'm sure you could negotiate if ordering 30 from the other 2 places mentioned)

Do I need to buy buffered or ECC memory with the HP ProLiant Microserver N40L? With the N36L I just bought the cheapest DDR3 memory that I could and its working wonderfully.

I just used the cheapest it works ok
Put 2X4Gigs in but for some unknown reason WHS only uses 4 Gigs

Thanks, because the sales rep from Esquire told me that I can't use the following Samsung DDR3 1333MHz non ECC desktop memory with that N40L: http://shop.esquire.co.za/ProductDescription.aspx?id=869290

I'm just going to go ahead and buy the N40L with that memory in any case.
I bought the cheapest they had and it works fine .
I read in this thread that a few people did the same
I bought another N40L so i have the 2 Gigs from the first one that i will put in the second machine and compare to see if there is a difference ,but so far the machine with the cheap RAM is rock solid no problems at all for the last month that i have had it .

Thanks FNfal. I didn't even realise that the N40L comes with 2GB modules, where as the N36L came with 2x 1GB modules.

Ordered one @ Esquire, hope I get it next week, PE no stock.
3x2TB drives ready.
Wonder if I should get a bluray drive/writer as well for it.
Esquire haven't had internal bluray on sale for a while.

why the hell are people lining it with 8GB Ram?
(which is even more confusing, when they try to save 100 bucks by getting the 210GT instead of the 520GT)

What are you guys using the HP for..... playing Crysis?

LMAO - that is funny right there :D

Decided to setup openelec (was on ubuntu). Two relatively small issues:

  1. WOL doesn't work. But it didnt on Ubuntu either. Anyone use this on the microserver? Used to work fine on my P4. Apparently it's OS dependent. I would like the microserver to automatically turn on when accessed like I asuume a NAS does. Also so I can use the Android remote to switch it on.
  2. The OS doesn't turn off my TV, it just switches off the hdmi output. My laptop is able to put the tv in standby and then bring it back again running Win7 (this is on vga though).

Some feedback back on tv standby seems that manufacturers deliberately prevent the TV from going into standby on hdmi. Apparently on dvi or vga it should work. Don't have a dvi cable to test this, and anyway need sound via hdmi

Hi all

Have my HPMS on order so just getting all the other bits and pieces together. My plan is to run OpenElec + XBMC on it. Problem is that my AV receiver only has an SPDIF input and the HDMI passthrough on my TV which typically connects to the AV receiver does not do pass through DTS :-(

Any suggestions on a cheap way to get an SPDIF output that has support in OpenElec? I have seen some USB sound card suggestions but drivers are always the issue...

Alternatively, a display card with separete SPDIF output? I see on the GT520 from Point of View http://www.pointofview-online.com/showroom.php?shop_mode=product_detail&product_id=248 that the card has SPDIF - I presume that is an input?

Thanks!

Enabled "allow this device to wake the computer" on the nic and WOL works lekker now. (Win7)

i think you would need to google around for a sound card with SPDIF, or check around the openelec forums...

so i picked up my hp on fri, just need to get a graphics card
but not sure which to get...

is the gt520 more future proof than the gt210?
ive also seen 512MB and 1gb versions
does it make a difference if using openelec?
