You can't tell me Windows 7 + XBMC would be better than OpenELEC, and that is all I was trying to tell Sigma.

No offense at all dude. I was looking forward to a healthy debate so I could perhaps see what it is you XBMC and OpenELEC guys see in your choices. That was all.

Sorry mate, I just have a little headache - usually I would come running :D

I also have no clue wtf "dlna" is, and why I need it.... i'll see if I can do some research on it someday.

my HP also "shares media", and I don't even need a client installed to access it on a PC?

In any case, Sinbad mentioned that openelec has dlna support?

If you look at most modern TV's as well as blu-ray and DVD players, you will see some form of a DLNA Client (Samsung AllShare for ex). If you have a DLNA server then you just need to plug your device into the network and instantly it gets access to all media.
There are also DLNA clients for Android and iOS devices so you can stream straight to your mobile goodies too.
If you have DLNA devices on your network, you can use other DLNA devices to control them. For example, I can load a movie/picture/song up on my Android device and push it to my LG TV.
There are quite a few things you can do with DNLA.
 
Hmmm.... is that TV going to process 28GB MKV's flawlessly?
(in any case...whats the point of connecting the hp to the tv using dlna, when you can connect it via HDMI?)

As for streaming from your phone to the TV, I really do not see the point of that when all my media is located on my HTPC in the first place?

If the dlna client cannot decode a format, the dlna server will transcode it first. Mezzmo is excellent at this. Full 1080p movies are watched flawlessly across all my devices. Honest.

I don't just connect the HP to a TV. The HP lives in my HT Room. I use the Plex Client to play straight out onto my projector via HDMI.
In the lounge I have a 46" Sammy and a Sammy BD5500 bluray player. The TV picks up the stream via AllShare (DLNA client) and the bluray player uses the Plex Client.
In my bedroom I have a 42" LG. On this I use the built in DLNA client. LG has an excellent one.
In my bar is a Sansui 40". Hooked up to this is a WDTV Live. It consumes via DLNA and because it supports almost anything, there is no transcoding on the server
My daughters have a 32" in their room and also a WDTV Live.
All 3 kids have notebooks and each one watches movies via media player (DLNA again) or the Plex Client. Whichever they prefer.
My gaming PC has a 32" Sammy on it. I can stream via DLNA there too but prefer using the Plex Client on the PC.

Mobile is not used that much, but they are all capable of streaming. For example, if the girls are not agreeing on something to watch, then 1 can use the TV and the other the galaxy tab.
Sometimes, one of them will go lay out at the pool and watch an episode of Vampire Diaries.

My entire house is Gigabit Ethernet and only the mobile devices consume by wifi.

And ALL the above clients get their streams from my little HP in the HT Room.

I hope you can understand why I argue these technologies so much. I don't want to be limited to a single viewing area.

Classic example. Vegging in the lounge and I fire up a movie I have downloaded on my bluray player via Plex. Damn, turns out to be an awesome movie and I would prefer to watch it in my HT Room. I turn off the bluray player and head upstairs. Using the plex client on my HP, I select the movie and it resumes from where I stopped it in the lounge.

I don't want limits. I am also looking for better ways of doing things, so I follow these threads watching to see if you guys have something that can improve on my current setup. Eyes always open :)
 
So.. My new Microserver is dead.

Red HP light, and orange power light, pressing it does nothing.

Hard disk and rear fan spin up, absolutely nothing else. USB and ethernet ports give power, ethernet light on the front blinks, but HDD one does not.

Tried resetting the CMOS, and pulling the battery for a while, no dice.

Anything else I should try before taking it back to Esquire?

buddy i think you need to draft a how to document. your setup sounds delicious...please :whistle:
 
most people don't have a home theater room with a projector, 5 large Plasmas and 3 Notebooks though...

I think xrapidx has a huge setup like this, including a touch screen mounted unit in the kitchen....afaik he uses xbmc to do it all...
we should ask him how he does his, too.
 
Thanks Esquire and team for helping me out with my microserver.

Successful swap inside of 30 minutes, the warranty department just wanted to give it a once over before swapping.

Now to get the AMD card working..

I was told yesterday I should get the 2 I ordered by today. I paid yesterday AM. Not heard a thing from them since sending confirmation of payment.
