I always phone in after each step that I take, their email is notoriously unreliable for sending.

They've always been helpful with a phonecall, if you have a good experience with a salesperson, ask for them next time :)

Having a personal relationship with my preferred sales guy probably made this whole ordeal a lot quicker ( They first wanted me to take the server to LetMeRepair to get it signed off as DoA, but he made a plan for me )

No one could call or email as all the telephones lines in Samrand and surroundings are down what is also strange is that the WiMax is also do down since 3 Pm this afternoon , Telkom promised us it will be up in the morning
It time to look at NeoTel as a option as it has happen for the third time already this year

I've made a new image ( 1.1gb, and better partitioned for a large install - basic mini ubuntu with no frills except gnome desktop and ssh-server, PM me if you want a copy )

Tomorrow, I'll see about getting Eden installed, as well as adding ATI support, though this might mean that there will be two seperate images, Nvidia and ATI drivers don't play well together.
 
@bullzeye, looking forward to playing around with that :D.

Also if this deal goes through, going to pickup 2x 3TB seagate drives for R3k from a contact here in Durbs, unofficially the Server doesn't support it but reading reports on forums online, it can be done. Hell, one can go upto 40TB on this thing :D. Will link later to some nice mods around.

First I heard of this. I have 2 x 3TB Seagates in my system, without the slightest issue. Running Win7 Ult. Disks are GPT. What's the supposed issue?
 
I think because it was listed in the spec at 2TB (i must double check) that users reported 4x2TB configurations working well etc (could be 3TB not as popular ?) but glad to hear its working yourside :). We are far off on 3TB pricing but should get there by year end :D.

Are those Seagate XT drives by anychance?

OpenElec is alot more lightweight than most Linux distros that the XMBC wiki recommends. OpenElec boots up fast and has enough goodness to do the usual basics (Samba shares, terminal, putty etc).

With their USB live installation, in less than 2 minutes you'll have Linux and XBMC isntalled.

But if you really want Ubuntu or Centos, I can't help you, I'm a Linux noob.

I opted for the GT520...glad I did. it has more updated GPU architecture which harnesses the latest developments in linux (sorry for my noob explanation, but reading up GT520 seemed like a way better option). So its more future proof.

Running 20GB BluRay rips, the card remains cool and is basically idling as it plays the movie.

I was messing about with OpenElec yesterday, so it's definitely an option... Thanks.
 
I'll probably get burned at the stake for this but I'm pretty convinced that my XBMC interface is faster on windows 7 than it was on openelec. Switching it to windows mode and doing some stuff on windows also works flawlessly where on ubuntu I basically had to do a hard reset if I tried that.

File management would be the main one that I've done lately since I've been shifting around large amounts of data after a hard drive failed. A few config changes. I did some stuff like customising the login screen (bypassed on startup/resume) because you see the same screen when it shuts down/hibernates etc. Looks cool now. In ubuntu I basically had to exit XBMC which the wife wouldn't be too happy about and in openelec there is nothing else anyway.

No info from DBN branch but if you up in Jozi you should be playing much faster than some of us :)

OK I might need another one :D

The original idea was to use this as a NAS / XBMC device running Ubuntu (as I have set up such devices before). I have a lot of older archived material that I have been wanting get access to via the network for some time. The drives (5TB+) are all NTFS so Ubuntu was not playing very nicely and did not even recognize the one NTFS drive (even though Windows does). Anyway, long story short ... I decided to try out Windows Home Server 2011 and I have to admit it is a very impressive OS! I gave up on WHS after all the issues I had with version 1. However WHS2011 just rocks. Got all my data shared via the network in around 5 minutes. I then started playing around with the client Backup function and OMW what a pleasure it is to use.

I will still use my main PC for streaming media to my PS3 for now, but when the Raspberry PI is finally available (one day) I'll use that to playback my media via openelec :D
