HP ProLiant MicroServer

I almost took a second one as well until I realized I first have to fill the first one with 3TB HDD's :p

I bought 4 in the Esquire specials. Fourth still sealed in the box and have no use for it - yet.
!

Eish I'd take it off you! But shipping to CPT would kill it. Think I'm gonna start buying all the other components (RAM, graphics, IR receiver, Harmony remote, hdds, something for 5.25" bay) before I even get the N40L :P Bit low on cash and need to find a steal deal :D

Problems enabling Raid

A couple of months back I purchased a MicroServer, upgraded to 4Gb.

The GeForce 210 graphics card prevented booting, but once that was removed all was well. I haven't yet tried reinstalling the card.

The 'Vail' WHS install was very smooth, and generally all is well.

The unit was supplied with bios 41 dated 29/07/2011 - the legal BIOS with with AHCI enabled - so I didn't bother to flash using a third-party BIOS.

This weekend I decided it was time to restart the project, so I purchased an Asus DVD drive and two 2TB Seagate green drives. All went in, and I experienced no problems in booting normally. THe system recognised all the new hardware.

My intention was to leave the originally supplied 250GB drive as the boot drive, the pair the two new drives as a Raid1 combo.

NB: I followed the excellent instructions in http://www.tricksguide.com/setup-raid-with-amd-onboard-sata-controller-on-your-hp-microserver.html

I F10'd, then changed the 'AHCI' to 'RAID' in the 'Advanced' portion of the BIOS.

My first problem was that I was unable to 'Ctrl-F' to get to the Raid Configuration Menu.

On about the tenth try I succeeded and managed to configure the two new drives as a Raid pair.

Then the system won't boot: it always ended up in the Windows repair module.

Eventually, after breaking the Raid pairing and reverting to 'AHCI', I managed to reboot successfully.

I am not sure if it means anything, but when I went to the the boot sequence menu I noticed that the boot drive was now identified as 'RAID', though this is probably due to the BIOS not allowing one to flag drive types individually.

Any suggestions most greatfully accepted.

More than likely a driver issue. You either need to load the raid driver into your existing windows load before switching the bios to raid or introduce it when doing a fresh install.

Your other problem also is that once you switch on raid in the bios all the sata ports are in raid mode so you need to add your single OS drive in as a raid "volume"

Doesn't look like it right now.. I'm looking/waiting :) Gosh I'd even take a second hand one for 1k

If you are still looking for a second hand one, I am selling my N40L. A few months old, in perfect working condition. Still got all the original stuff, boxes/manuals etc so it's like new. Selling it as I am going back to my popcornhour. My TV does not have an overscan/pc setting option - so parts of my image was being cut-off. Did not have the patience to try and work through it on my lounge TV as the image was perfect on my second/third TV's in the bedrooms.

Will sell for R1000.00. Shipping to CPT would cost R69.00 and take 2-3 days.

Also have a low profile Gigabyte Nvidia 520 and a vantec external sound card for it which I can sell separately too.

I've already bought an N40L. However I'm interested in the GT520. Will send you a PM :)

Can someone help me out here. My server at the office died today, and I am trying to replace it with my spare Microserver ()

I am trying to install XP onto my microserver, but I'm not winning. I am trying to use XP because thats the licence I have.

It goes thru the install process until I have to select a drive to install to, but it does not see the hdd.

I have tried installing from ODD and from a flash drive. (I doubt it makes a difference tho)

Are there drivers or something I need to use for the installation to see the disk?

I can confirm that i was able to install XP on the HP micro server, however it was last year...so can't remember exactly how.
Did you try download the RAID drivers from the HP website?also +1 to check AHCI.

Did you install the nvidia drivers and try its overscan feature?

I have to use it on one of my older TV's

XBMC allows you to readjust for any overscan in the software?

Ok, so after hasseling with this damn thing for hours today, I manage to get XP installed only to find that there are NO XP drivers for the thing

FFS what a waste of time.

That's why I always do my research first to make sure everything is compatible :)

If you are installing XP you have bigger problems

Can you connect a USB HDD to the internal USB port? I know that USB flash drives work. Reason I ask is I have a Western Digital 2.5" 1TB that has a broken case, there is no SATA connections (USB controller soldered on) so would like to stick that in the N40L somehow when I get it on Thursday.

Don't see why not unless it doesn't provide enough power.
