HSDPA - average 500kbps

I agree, it actually sounds surprisingly accurate. I am usually lucky to get even 500kbps , usually i get what i call "extremely good" 3G speeds [300-400] . I never actually know if i am on HSDPA or plain 3G [based on speeds] .

When Telkom puts something on their website its true :D

well I usually get between 100kBps - 160kBps which is average for my HSDPA.

Just got this in Midrand:

Download Speed: 747 kbps (93.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 345 kbps (43.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

As often discussed, it's a function of signal level, interference and other RF parameters, and obviously loading.

A 'new' factor to consider is what profile you have on the network, 3G (384/64) or HSDPA (1800/384). Not to be confused with the profile you get select on your data card.

This profile is a function off what you pay for the service.

Pre-paid HSDPA users should check, they could be on the 'wrong' profile and will see a cap of 384Kb/s.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of users (on the correct profile) actually get anything near the advertised top speed. I seem to remember the figure 1.8 touted at launch, but now lowered in Vodacom literature to 1.2MB/s, with "expected speeds between 400 & 800K".

it would def be gud to see whats the ave speed people get on HSDPA.
Perhaps MyAdsl should do another independent comparison, get feedback from all us users, to get a real-world-Joe on the street user- average...
... still... 500kbps ave, even though we may be told: that is a good worldwide standard, is still crappy on a system with 1.8Mbps 'capability'... thats not even 50% efficiency.
I remember when rumours of HSDPA came out a few months ago, with talk of 1.8Mbps, I was thinking wholly sh*!, just the other day I was still connecting at 9500bps, now look at the technology. Now that we've got it, while faster than what we're used to in SA, still doesn't give that warm fuzzy feeling that expectation has been realised. :)
Anyways, I used to get only 3G speeds on HSDPA, got profile fixed (thanx V3G!) now get a bit faster, so at least I know I'm on HSDPA.
There are these r-a-r-e moments when I get almost 800kbps.
But, if the real ave is only about 500kbps, don't u think that's a sign that the networks should be upping the tower capabilities???

Where and how do I check this? I'm about 700 metres from Vodaworld and last nite it was really slow, in spite of 3-4 bars.

From what I recall, the original ad was speeds "Up to 1.8MB/s". I have often seen sustained speeds of close to or slightly over the 1.2MB/s with the average between 800kbps and 1.0Mbps. The other day, saw a download speed of 1372kbps and upload of 372kbps (using vodacom speed test) while sitting in the departures lounge at Jhb International.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 816 kbps (102 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 265 kbps (33.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

In Midrand during hailstorm :D

when i was having probelms with my 3g signal i was getting the following of the vodacom site:
Download Speed: 213 kbps (26.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 53 kbps (6.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

and the following of saol.com:
Download Speed: 37.3 kbps (4.66 KB/sec transfer rate)

everything was incredibly slow except vodacom speed test:confused:

i use my phone as a modem for my pc (motorola v1050)
