HSDPA over Wifi

As far as I'm concerned, speed is definitely going to suffer as a result of all the connections alking to each other. There was a unit recenly sold by HI-FI Corp - WiFi/HSDPA Router. Can't unfortunately remember the price.

At the 'relative low' data rates of mobile comms (<10Mb/s), you'll probably not see a major impact in routing this way.

Personally I stay away from WiFi as much as possible, probably the most overrated technology in a long time. I'm the proud owner of a large number of WiFi AP's, amplifiers, cell extenders, etc. and still have not found a stable solution. The joys of working in an unlicensed band....:rolleyes:

My 3G router is LAN connected and as stable as can be.

1 - Purchase this USB wi-fi network card that can run in peer to peer mode.
2 - Plug that card into the notebook and configure it for peer-to-peer mode.
3 - Now your cell phone and other devices can see that network card as an access point.
4 - Now configure internet connection sharing to share your HSDPA connection through that USB wi-fi connection.

Done.

Problems/Dangers:
1 - What is the working range of this USB-Network card? I'd estimate about 20 metres max simply cos of the tiny size of the thing.
2 - Will microsoft's internet connection sharing work?

You can take your laptop and the cell phone to the shop with you and test it before you buy it.

yes it does, but im afraid i can only connect to networks and not create one, as a router would let me

It should work, but you are not going to know unless you actually test it out. Maybe one of your friends has an AP you can test this out with?:)

What exactly were you trying to setup?:confused: I've only recently started using WIFI, so I'm still fascinated by it:D Any stuff you want to give away, I'll gladly accept;)

v3g has a very beeg house to cover, so he needs several APs to adequately blanket his place with wifi :).

It's not so much the size thing, as multiple AP's could resolve that.

It's more the inherent unreliability. I have an AP in my office. I can spit at it (and often do), it's so close. Yet I loose connectivity multiple times per day to it. Although D-Link seems to be the worst, other brands do the same.

We are using D-Link products at our office and I haven't had any problems with them. Our network is over 2 floors with the AP and 1 pc and 1 laptop upstairs and 1 pc and 1 laptop downstairs that are connected to the AP the entire day. We have the AP broadcasting our WIFI internet. We do also have ADSL on other pcs'/laptops that are not on this network though.

Is your AP broadcasting 3G internet?:confused:

before i buy it, im confused: how would u create a WEP key if the AP connects via the LAN port?

50-100M is ok for indoor use - but this all depends on the "environment" the unit will be used in, as stated there.

Now I'm confused too :confused:
The router connects to a LAN port on your PC. You then enter like 10.0.0.2 or whatever in your case into your browser (FF/FF2/IE). You are then able to set up the router (settings and whatnot) this way. Somewhere in there you will be able to set up the WEP key. This is what you will probably have to enter on your N95 too to be able to access the AP.

That’s if I understood your question correctly.
 
50-100M is ok for indoor use - but this all depends on the "environment" the unit will be used in, as stated there.

so should i buy that trendnet AP? its R481 + R45 delivery. Or could I get one cheaper somewhere else? Please let me know, its urgent
 
That unit is the cheapest at Sybaritic yes. Also seems to be the cheapest Wireless router available from a reliable shop. But I cannot assure you that it will work for what you want to try though. Theoretically it could work.

Don’t you know someone that has a wireless router so that you can try this out first?
 
no i dont know anyone with wifi, wlan, or anything that concerns my problem. i hoped that one of you did.
v3g said that he has few APs, hopefuly he will tell me if i can just connect the TrendNet AP to my Laptop via RJ45, share my HSDPA on the control panel, and work.
Where is he when we need him...
