Over the time I've used HSDPA with both providers prepaid (no view on contract offerings):
- MTN has been more reliable in connectivity and bundle purchasing, on average - Vodacom has had periods when connectivity is so unreliable as to be not worth using, and some issues in purchasing
- MTN has the 100MB option which, for people who mainly use home or office ADSL and 3G for other locations, is worthwhile
Problems that should not even exist:
- Neither provider offers rollover
- MTN does not allow you to buy a new bundle before the 30 days is up
- MTN offers no way of purchasing bundles via SMS or USSD or the web, you have to use the 141 IVR (if I'm wrong please let me know)
- MTN offers no way of checking your balance via the web (same comment)
- MTN have really fallen down in terms of support on this forum ... matters to me even if we're a small proportion of the total market
