HSDPA versus ADSL

The choice is really a no brainer at this stage R75 per gig as compared to R500 per gig.

I would only use it if I absolutely needed mobility for work purposes or if Telkom had no ADSL service in my area.

ADSL has nothing to worry about.

Maybe mybroadband should consider testing MTN's HSDPA service to see how it stacks up against the others?

I really hope for Vodacom's sake that the testing was done in a poor HSDPA reception area, otherwise the results of tests like these are going to put off even more potential clients (those that the pricing did not scare off).

Why and how? It's not available to the man on the street yet as there are no cards readily available.

Soo......on saturday i was in by my local vodacom shop to get a new celly cover and to chat a bit to the consultant (a consultant who has a cellC contract :) ) and lo an behold. There was the brochure for the HSDPA service an everything was available.
Interesting.

So afterwards me and my buddy go over to MTN to go see if his phone is back from the garage yet. .... Just out of curiousity i ask about their HSDPA offering and how much it costs.

"

..?
"

is all i get out of them.

Personally for me to test a product.....it actually has to exist before I can do a comparison on it.

Interesting, but hardly a reflection of what the service will be like in full swing.

Comapring a highly stressed & rapidly expanding (~25,000 line install backlog) service such as Telkom ADSL with a realitively 'virgin' one is not totally fair as Vodacom's offering will only show its true colours once its getting the 'sheet' kicked out of it.

In the pipeline. When they have cards and their towers are ready will will test all the services (including MyWireless & iBurst)

wow better latency, wouldn't have guessed that. does vodacom go thru sat-3 ? also was that on a unshapped account, i guess so. if they both go thru sat-3 where does the extra ms come from ?

Bad news for HSDPA

ADSL outperformed HSDPA when it came to local speeds, local latency and large downloads. HSDPA came to the fore in the international services arena and showed its true class.

This is only because of contention rations surely? Very low on HSDPA right now I imagine.

Not very exciting I must say...

Whoaaa Tibby... R75 per gig? Have you found a way around the Telkom line rental my friend? Consider the fact that this was 1 meg ADSL it was compared to so add 1 meg line rental before coming to the cost per gig :-)

On the Vodacom TV ads they state "Faster than ADSL". This is a massive blow to Telkom's ADSL. Expect Telkom to raise their ADSL speed to 2MB soon.

As if Telkom cares :(

Does it seem like Telkom might be intentionally promoting its Vodacom interests with it's lacksadasical approach to ADSL roll out? Only residential users who cannot get ADSL would consider paying r500 per gb.

Outside of the big 3 cities served by iBurst and Sentech, HSDPA would be the only solution available if there was no ADSL.

if merc says "faster than a bmw" its advertising complaints longer than my arm..... doesnt the same count here?

In testing, the average local ADSL downlink speed was 828 kbps while HSDPA was 564 kbps.

564? doesnt sound like 1.8mbps to me
