Received an SMS earlier today saying that existing 3.6 HSDPA customers (R49 subscribers) now automatically has access to HSUPA countrywide. The SMS said that I must visit www.vodacom.co.za to check wether my modem is compatible. Just checked it and all I can see is just a press release on the matter.

Anybody else received this SMS?

Novatel MC950D and Huawei E272 supports UPA.

The R49.00 subscriber thing burns my *ss !!
When can we expect some value from Vodacom ? Must say, been looking at adsl offers from Megabitz and its mighty tempting....4 M line ,5 G cap at R349.00..beats my 1.8M line and 2 G cap at R449.00 every month...

Big Kriss you right, vodacom is the biggest rip off I've ever seen in my life. To bad I signed a contract, dumbest mistake I've ever made

I can't say it's really bugged me yet, very few people seem to be benefiting from the extra speed, but it is early days still.

I think I'm getting good value from Vodacom, can't understand why you don't.
I pay R389 per month for 1.8Mbps (and I get close to that) and a 2GB cap (and I make sure I get all of that).

Does that R349.00 include your analog line rental and your ADSL line rental?
Don't forget we are still being charged twice for the same piece of copper.

While I don't agree that Vodacom's pricing is a "rip off", and consequently MTN's pricing as well since MTN mostly copied Vodacom's pricing, I do want to point out that had you spent time reading the posts in this and other MyBroadband forums, you would have read that most forumites advise against signing lengthy contracts - there are other options including month2month and pre-paid.

Are those the only 2 modems currently available that support HSUPA?

What about the Novatel Merlin UX870? Or the Option Globetrotter Fuji Express (GE0201) card?

Do they only support upto HSDPA 7.2 but not HSUPA?

I believe so.
Look I know it's not too clever but I installed the MTN drivers and firmware that supports 7.2mb on my Vodafone E220. I'm provisioned for 3.6mb and the results are reasonably good but possibly no better than I was getting prior to the upgrade.

When I connect to the network (using mobile partner software) I'm connected at 7.2mb

Speed tests as follows:

voda speed test:
Download Speed: 2058 kbps (257.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 122 kbps (15.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

speedtest.net results to cape town, LA and Sydney:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/279438436.png

http://www.speedtest.net/result/279439584.png

nothing particularly spectacular but what is worth mentioning is when using Orbit download manager compared to saving the file either via IE or FF, I get download speeds of in excess of 270kBps and averages of around 180kBps which is very reasonable.
