Nope
We know for almost certainty that a new flagship phone will be released from a major manufacturer every year on almost the same day. Yes?

And we know that more and more people want that flagship as soon as it comes out. Yes?
No one is prepared to keep an S6 for 2 years so what do they do? They sell it.

We know that there's always a demand for Samsung/ Apple given the rep.

Now weigh up your 1 year old HTC against a 1 year old S7/i6. Which phone do you think/people will go for?

Therefore your HTC is worthless when the new version is released and you now want to upgrade, which as I alluded to earlier, is becoming the norm.

Assuming of course they still in business which leaves you with even less support as "loyal" customer.

Better off getting a cheap Chinese knock off.

Bottom line is that the company is dying.

I agree with most of what you're saying, even with the odd logic. Some small things though.

Most people go for Samsung / Apple because the networks throw them at the consumers and they are advertised everywhere (HTC marketing just sucks). On top of that, most don't "buy" the phone, they upgrade, and they upgrade to them because they're available on the contract they're already paying for. Or they're taking out a new contract, and what do they see advertised? Samsungs and Apples. And because of that you'd find that the second hand market is flooded with the older models. I don't think it has anything to do with resale value later down the line. People get what they want, and flog what they had, because of what was available.

You can't weigh up my M8 with an S7 or i6. They are too far apart. My phone came out with the S5, I am not sure which iPhone was out around the time. However I'm sure that someone in the second hand market who only knows of Samsung / iPhones would go that route because it's what they know. But like anything else, if someone wanted a specific brand, they'd buy it.

I for one didn't buy my phone with the intention of selling it. I'm using it till it dies or gets stolen. The less it's worth is great for me, because i pay less for insurance. But I know that I am the minority when it comes to use and what brand I get. At the time I chose the best phone, IMO, and 2 years down the line I am still happy. So your statement of my phone being worthless confuses me, and pleases me at the same time.

If you look at M8's and S5's on Gumtree / OLX, you'll find plenty of both selling between 3 and 5k. Very similarly priced, but with a few (crazy) outliers. Your entire "HTC is not the brand to go with because of bad resale value" arguments are invalid based on that alone.

Before you say "get a cheap chinese knock off", please compare an HTC flagship, former or current, to a cheap knock off - there are vast differences. I got my father a HiSense a year or so ago. It's miles apart from my M8. You just can't compare flagship HTC's to knock offs, unless you're talking about their lower end phones. Where did you even pull that statement out of anyway?

HTC is also far from a dying company. They're a company that have hit rough times, but they have great products, and I'm sure the Vive and the HTC 10 will change things for them.

I know you'll probably disagree with everything I've said, and carry on resenting HTC for reasons I don't understand, but if you ever come across someone with one, take a look. I am not loyal, but if I were in the market for another phone, it would be an HTC 10 because I think it looks better, has a better UI, and a better build than any of the other current flagships. It's mostly my own opinion, I know, but I am not alone here.

I would be bitter too if the only one available was the flagship body with the insides of a mid range phone :/ Now that is a good reason NOT to get an HTC 10.

I got a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I'm done with phones in terms of latest and greatest. Been there many times, and it gets tiresome every year. Working in the industry I suppose contributed to that, but I honestly don't see the need why people want the best available and don't use half the features of the phone. HTC makes some darn good handsets, always have since the days of leaf, but unfortunately they were too shy to throw money at campaigns. They didn't want to invest in things to pull people to their phones, and with Samsung and Apple around, you were going to be destroyed regardless of how nice your phones are.

But it would be interesting to hear how many people use the phone to its fullest, and what features they use. Not many people will say they bought the phone because they like the chipset, or because they enjoy the fact that it has 4GB ram. It's the usual, i bought it because it has a good camera and I can play games on it.

So to each their own, some like HTC, some don't. I like the H10, it's a quality device, but it was never going to do well in China anyway. So a bit harsh on them to use that as a yardstick, as Chinese people and phones are the most difficult to please

Very true. I to like the HTC 10, I believe the HTC M9 was just a misstep by HTC, due to the SoC it had that created many problems, also their whole 'UltraPixel' thing had many people steer away from HTC, and looking at other alternatives i.e. LG, Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi etc... Htc pretty much dug their own grave.

Had they invested less in UltraPixel, and more in Phablets, top end compact phones and marketing, they'd be in a good place. HTC used to lead in Large screen smartphones, before Samsung had even made the Galaxy Note, HTC were the ones pushing boundaries, then they just fell asleep after the whole Beats deal fell apart.

They need a better naming scheme on top of everything, consistency is important. The Desire name was great, they could have stuck with it in their top end.

Geez Chuck I guess you just closed myBB with your post.

Anyway is not just about marketing. People want piece of mind when they get a phone. There has to be an availability of parts and accessories as well as not having to wait forever should anything go wrong.

Look its a great phone but its just not practical imo. If you look at what people mostly use their phones for getting a high risk device for one or 2 features is just not worth it. Other poster absolutely has to get this phone because the speakers and screen are great.

I mean really????

So I take you're not interested in the HTC10 because you want to keep your M8 till it breaks or gets stolen?

Anyway to cut a long story short HTC is like SAAB, great products but no one wants them and their popularity is waning, with even a previously unknown company like Lenovo and Xiaomi trumping them on every level including the all important sales factor.

Hisense is crap by the way. they not even on GSM. Go play with the Xiaomi range of phones and then come back here to report. At least there are people that actually sell them.

HTC's poor smartphone sales and ongoing struggle in a hotly competitive market have resulted in its second net loss this year, the company reported Monday.

The Taiwanese phone maker managed to cling to a tiny profit in the first quarter this year, but a downturn in sales contributed to a loss of $138 million (NT$4.48 billion) for the third quarter.

The company's results show how hard it is to succeed financially in a world where so many smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system are available. Not that long ago, HTC was the world's top smartphone maker by volume, and Google tapped it to build the first Android-powered phone, the G1. It crafted acclaimed devices that found favor with customers and critics alike.

But HTC's sales figures have been slowly declining for four years as it struggles to establish its brand and business while competing with giants like Apple and Samsung. Also, Chinese upstarts Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo have only made competition harder.

If you read you own link you'd know that this isn't the HTC10 that will be available to the rest of the world. I think the article was intentionally written like this for people like you.

This isn't the HTC 10 with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 SoC and 4GB of RAM, instead we're talking about the much-hated HTC 10 Lifestyle, that only has a Snapdragon 652 and 3GB of RAM.

The SD820-powered HTC 10 is only listed on the company's Chinese website as "coming soon"

Agree with everything there.

Yeah, keeping my M8 till it dies. I'd love the 10, but not enough to fork out 10k+ or R500+ a month for 2 years. It's a want, not a need :p Still pretty happy with my phone. Besides the odd tiny dent (probably the one and only downside I can think of for a metal phone), it's in mint condition.

What about the fact that they decided to put the battery underneath the motherboard?

:wtf:

You need a skilled tech just to do a battery change.

Was a deal breaker for me.

No it wont, the 820 version will be the flagship, hence no one is buying

Xiaomi sells top phones with SD820, the 650 & 652 are also mid range over there
Did you read the article? In some countries the 10 Lifestyle is the flagship, the 820 variant isn't available to all countries.

But why the heck doesn't it have FM radio??? Not too concerned about the absence of IR, but I listen to a lot of radio.

Qualcomm got rid of this feature in their high end chips. I have no idea why. I use both the FM radio and IR blaster on my G4 and I will miss them when I upgrade.

We pay more for less these day. I can get a cheaper phone with HD graphics, LTE, SD card upto 32GB and FM radio at 40% of this but the chipset will be so horrible I will miss the high-end phone.

Because most of where these high end phones are marketed around the world have cheap mobile data, so streaming your radio station is easy. It's just us that get screwed.

I dont care what anyone says, I want this phone.

Having dual speakers and a 2k non-Super AMOLED screen, this will work almost perfectly with my google cardboard VR glasses

Now I just need a 2TB microSd card

I'm selling a brand new htc 10 gold 32g if you interested, brand new in the box

Article is outdated bro....or at least HTC promised the folks in China that there will be a flagship coming...hence the 652 variant is called Lifestyle :whistling:
