HTC DESIRE HD

Just an observation from toying around with a ported DHD rom on my normal Desire - DO NOT spend money on the HTC Locations turn-by-turn navigation. The maps are solid, but the interface is sucky. Also, its POI database is abysmal - Nearby > Eat & Drink gives me three terminals at JHB Int. airport, including cargo, and 2 at Waterkloof AFB :eek:

Might get better, but as it stands it is near useless.

so what Nav system would anyone suggest getting once we finally get our DHD's cause i kinda wanted a nice Nav system
preff with voice prompts thats not 2 exp with some kewl features.

I'm sure the Nav system will get better.

AFAIK, HTC is using TomTom for their nav system.

Maps supplied by TomTom (think it's TeleAtlas, if I recall) but the software was developed by Route66. I don't quite know where all the TomTom-fanfare came from as there isn't a single TomTom logo to be seen anywhere, whilst it proudly shows the Route66 logo in the bottom-right corner on startup.

As for alternatives - Navigon, CoPilot and NDrive are all spread around the innertoobz and, given a bit of reading, easy enough to get working. Soon as I've made up my mind I'll buy one of the three...
 
To be clear, could someone who has the DHD tell me if the maps are preloaded with Tom Tom or Google Maps Navigation (Beta) or what?
 
just got off the phone with vodacom upgrade department, they said the phones have been received and should be getting distributed to other branches from today!! :D :D :D :D
 
Google Maps are still there, is is HTC's own new proprietary application called HTC Locations. Google Maps is a live service - unless you use a modded version, it does not store maps locally.

Locations does, and I'm sure the local phones will come with SA maps preloaded. Even if they don't, it's only about a 115mb download. Now Locations gives you pretty much the same functionality as Google Maps in its standard form, being pretty much limited to getting directions without any turn-by-turn instructions. To add that - according to the ROM running on my phone - will cost you $30 per year, or $40 for the lifetime of the phone. Obviously with the maps being onboard it means that you don't need a data connections to get directions, or turn-by-turn instructions with the addition of Premium Navigation.
 
Hi guys, i cant do any work today cause im downloading games and apps on my dhd, screen is great if not better than Galaxy s, ive got my phone screen on 51% and its brilliant, my colour is brown.

i doubt its better than the SGS indoors, that being said, SLCD is better than SAMOLED under direct sunlight. i think engadged did a test which showed this.

Update: MTN in PE said i should come in on monday. i dont know why, but i have been calling every 4-5days to check on stock availability.

But due to Samsungs anti-reflective coating on their screen I believe the Galaxy S was better under direct sunlight IIRC.

just a thought, even though vodacom is distributing the phones(my branch has placed a order and said it should be in by this weekend), does it mean the phones wont be available till the new contracts are out on the 7th?

i think that people that b!tch and moan excessively about battery performance, dont really understand that this is not so much a phone as it is a high end computing device, added that it is NOT a phone from years ago, with a weeks battery life that had no apps or wifi or 3G or BT to run, the performance is acceptable and not out of the range for a current smartphone.
 
You should be able to pick it on any vodacom contract, and they will tell you if you need to pay in.
