I heard a rumor that when the HTC Dream becomes available in May it will only be on contract through MTN.

Can anybody confirm this? I really want one but am Vodacom and my upgrade is next month!

I dunno, but there are a few names attached to this phone that might lead to some confusion....it's basically the Google Phone aka "G1" [with the Android OS] .

So i don't know if there might be some confusion as to what exact naming we get. I also thought i read somewhere about Vodacom bringing in the "G1" , which effectively might be the HTC Dream ...

I can imagine the branded G1 being provider exclusive, but i can't imagine the actual HTC model being provider exclusive ? That's like the Nokia N97 being Vodacom exclusive... Unless it's something about the OS on the phone being supported/not supported per provider as Android is not exactly established.....

The G1 is T-Mobile's exclusive model. The HTC Dream itself isn't finalised yet, although it should be similar if not the same as the G1.

If you see the phone in SA, I'm pretty sure it'll be the HTC Dream and not the G1.

I had some confusion when I started looking at the Android phones. Apparently the T-Mobile G1 is exactly the same as the HTC Dream.

HTC have a new phone - the HTC Magic - which is basically a small upgrade on the Dream/G1. (It has more ram, is based on Android 1.5, has longer battery life, but doesn't have a built in keyboard)

MTN SP and Nashuamobile have both started advertising the HTC Dream (http://www.mtnsp.co.za/shop/RetailSpecials/Pages/HTCDeals.aspx, or a banner on http://www.nashuamobile.co.za)

I emailed Leaf (the HTC importers in SA) a few weeks ago and they confirmed that MTN is getting the Dream(aka G1), and Vodacom is getting the Magic.

I spoke to LEAF Cape Town who confirmed the above - Dream on MTN and Magic on Vodacom. He said they were still waiting for handsets so arrive in the country.
