Hi guys,

what do you guys think about the HTC Dream (aka Google G1)? I like it and want to get it, but I need your opinions first. If you don't like it, any other recommendations?

Thanks

I got one recently, and all I can say is I cannot stop playing with it.

It has a ton of pros, but 2 cons:
1: Battery life. Mine does not ever get past 2 days. Then again, I keep fiddling with it.
2: No multitouch. Not a big deal, but just a heads up.

One think that annoyed me was that the Dream does not have an onscreen keyboard, so if you want to type in something short you still have to slide out the entire keyboard. A real pain in the ....

But the good news is you can install the soft keyboard, so now i have an onscreen keyboard and a full qwerty :D

If you don't mind charging your phone every day, get this one. It is BRILLIANT!

[/end rave]

why the dream? its first gen google phone. why not magic or hero?

I got one 3 days ago on an anytime 200 topup contract from MTN for R169/PM which is a bargain if you ask me.

I rooted it and loaded Android 1.6 which does have a mini on screen keyboard. I am very happy with the phone and would definitely recommend it.

my wife has one. been playing around with it for a bit. i am liking it

Short battery life is normal on smart-phones, 2 days is actually quite good with average usage

I returned my Dream within 7 days and am still waiting for a replacement (3 weeks now). The reason was because the battery life was absolutely pathetic and I'm sure the phone was faulty. It used to take about 5 hours to fully charge and with moderate use use, I used to only get about 8 hours. With heavy, continuous use, the battery used to last only about 4 hours. The bottom, back part of the phone used to get quite hot as well.

Other than that the phone is awesome, and the Android market has tons of stuff to download. The MTN contracts for this phone are well worth it. I just hope I get my replacement quickly.

just wanna know hard is it to root Android phones...any harder than jailbreak an iPhone maybe?

The point of android is customization, Its linex you can do what you want.

Ja thats definitely something wrong

The one disadvantage with the Dream is that the rom memory is very small. The Donut update will fit on the phone's memory but future updates might not.

I have messed around with the hero, from an OS point of view, android is the bomb, i think it will take over very soon. Google just does it right!

I have had mine about 2 weeks now, but don't think my GPS works as it can never find my location using the satelites. Has anyone else had this experience and is it perhaps possible to get a different Map source other than Google maps loaded onto the phone?

ndrive is great for android, as good as garmin. google it, you should track down a copy somewhere.

New still around R4k to R6k! 2nd hand R3 and up... new on MTN contract - R2.6K!!!

Depends where you buy it. You can get it brand new for R3800 directly from Leaf. The MTN contract still works out dirt cheap though! (Plus you get the airtime to use).

Ok i have had my dream for about 5 days and i was loving it it as a brilliant phone but now it appears it is not charging :( it says it is charging with the charger and usb but the battery does not go up at all ?

so going to take it into mtn today
