i got an early upgrade and was seriously considering the htc hero.

On all the reviews i have read, the one negative comment is the hardware. They all complain the phone could do with some better hardware.

Considering HTC just launched the HD2, with snapdragon processor, should i wait for an HTC android phone to get this processor?

What are your guys thoughts? Anybody know if something is on the cards?

i'm in exactly the same position, got an upgrade coming up and I want a sweet ass phone. Hero is awesome except for the hardware, HD2 is awesome but crap-ish software. HTC doesn't seem to have anything HD2-spec'd running Android coming soon, so right now the Hero is still your best bet as far as Android is concerned. The Acer Liquid should be out soon also, but when that'll be available on contract in SA is another story.
So far I'm thinking HD2....it might be windows mobile 6.5, but it's tweakable via xda-developers.com, and fully upgradeable to WM7 when it lands next year. And the hardware just kills anything out there at the moment. But the call of android is strong, I might end up waiting for the Liquid. Another one to consider is the Motorola Milestone (Droid). I don't care much for the hardware keyboard, but it's a very well-specced android handset, doing very well in the states. But I just wish HTC wouldn't be such utter BITCHES and release an HD2 running Android.

The question you must ask is: with the new snazzy snapdragon phones coming out, do you really REALLY want android bad enough to be stuck with an underspecced phone for another 2 years? Personally I think I'm going to wait. Also, I'm going to buy mine cash from overseas or from leaf.co.za, then just get a cheaper contract. Waiting for suppliers to get stock of new phones has been the bane of my existence, I'm tired of waiting months for a "new" phone that's already obsolete overseas.

O yeah, there's also the Sony Ericsson X10, but don't hold your breath...Best of luck, whatever you end up buying!

I'd also wait. All the reviews i've read and heard , all complained about the phone feeling "sluggish" compared to the older HTC Android phones.

Also it's debatable how mature Android OS is on the HTC Hero vs. the hardware.

If you're specifically after Android, there are plenty of phones coming, maybe scan through this:

Its not even a year ago as the HTC Dream G1 became the first Android enabled phone to be released publicly on October 22nd and now we have listed more than 50 Android phones expected in the near future:

you guys have any clue if and when the motorolla droid (mile stone) will be released in sa?

If you wait for new technology to come out all the time, you'll wait forever! There's ALWAYS something better around the corner coming out, can't do anything about that. Get the phone you want now, when those phones come out eventually it will almost be time to upgrade again. Hero is one awesome phone!

I completely agree, but the Hero uses the same old chipset that HTC has been using for 2 years. With the new 1gHz+ snapdragon era just around the corner, I think this one might just be worth waiting another month or so for. Then again I haven't used the Hero, so who knows, maybe it's still worth going for. I have, however, used the HTC Touch HD running WinMo and it's kinda sluggish. I believe the Hero and the Touch HD share similar hardware, but maybe android is a bit snappier. Having seen what WinMo runs like on the HD2, I might actually even be tempted to forgo android and stick it out with WinMo, just because of the sweet-ass hardware.

As far as the Motorola is concerned, I have seen it on sale at cacell.co.za for about R11 000, but that's highway robbery. I'm sure you could order it from devicewire.co.uk or expansys.com.hk and save some bucks. If you have to get it on contract, it might just be easier to get the Hero. New phones take aaaages to actually pass BS ICASA approval and whatnot before they finally become available on contract.

Sometimes I think it'll just be easier to just get a nice basic little nokia phone for calls and an ipod touch for everything else. Sigh.

Good hunting, people.

+1

Get yourself a Hero - you won't be sorry. And don't worry about software upgrades, you can always get the latest software at xda-developers.

Most reviews for the Hero were also written before HTC did a couple of software releases that fixed the sluggishness.

i have a hero... best device i have ever owned and ive had ALL of them.

sluggish my @#SSSSSS

i think a lot of those complaints were for the early release, but you will get the latest firmware that is fast ( not android 2, that coming now in december )

this thing is faster than my buddies iphone 3gs

not to mention that it just won device of the year and phone of the year.

some interesting opinions here.

I know the deal with if you wait for technology you just gonna keeping on waiting, but it is really old hardware.

KVI thanks for your feedback, and confirming it isnt sluggish. I think i need to physically go play with one in order to help make my mind up. Anybody know where they have some demos you can mess about with for a little bit?

I think best best is to go play with the HTC hero this weekend and decide from there

Haha, thanks for the video. Wish the dude did something better with the phone, 'cause he was useless. Also don't know how multitouch zoom works. LOL

People please help my wife has a stupid phone here which could ahve been attacted by a virus and it does not want tp communicate with my laptop tp start with , apparentely I shuold load some silly software ,

Maybe you should tell us what stupid phone it is. Why do you think it's a virus? And why again did you post your Q in this thread?

I have an HTC Hero and rates it as one of my best phones ever. I have upgraded it to the latest firmware, via xda-developers.com, and it is very fast. The hardware is excellent. It feels nice in your hand, especially with the chin which makes it a very comfortable fit in your palm. It has a white non-slip teflon like finish. The screen is excellent. Could have been a bit bigger for my eyes. The on-screen keyboard is good, but I still prefer a physical qwerty. The Motorola Droid has a physical qwerty, so you may take a look at that (http://www.getsmartphone.net/2009/11/go-moto.html), but it lacks the brilliant HTC Sense user interface. Doesn't even have Motoblur, just vanilla Android UI. I heard from a local advertising agency that the Droid will be in South Africa in Q1 2010, under the name Milestone. Don't know why the dropped Droid for Milestone of non-US markets, go figure.
