HTC Hero vs HTC Magic

I had a look, and couldn't find anything specific.

Looking to decide between a Hero and a Magic; from what I can see the differences are minimal

Camera
Headphone Jack
Sense UI

Hardware and OS is identical.

If the camera and jack are not big issues, and the UI can be rommed, what is the significant difference? Esp given the prices?
 
Apparently the google branded Magic phones have less RAM (192 vs 256). Price difference is more than R1000, maybe the feb deals will be more attractive. I can live without the 3.5mm jack but I'm hoping that at least the Magic camera takes pics as good as the Nokia 5800.
 
That's the thing for me- assuming it's not the Google branded one, is the only difference the camera and the 3.5 jack, and does that justify a price difference of over R1000???
 
i had magic, and now ive been using hero for a couple months.

for me the hero is MUCH better, purely because of sense UI. thats worth at least 3 grand more in my book. not to mention better phone body and feel.
 
It's the same hardware except for the camera and audio jack. The Hero has SenseUI with multi-touch etc, so definitely go for the Hero.

I was concerned that getting a phone with HTC's custom UI would mean waiting longer for upgrades, but since we're still on Android 1.5 with the Magic - and no word from Leaf if they're ever going to upgrade, let alone when - I'd go for the Hero.

Having to wait for Leaf to get around to organising an upgrade is why I'm buying from the US now. That way I get the full Market and all the updates as they roll out - and it's cheaper.

Nexus One, here I come.
 
The market is dependant on service provider rather than where your phone comes from... that's why we fake our providers in order to access the full market..

Really? People in these forums who have put the Rogers (Canada) ROM on their android phones say they get the full market immediately.

Are you saying it's not just in the ROM?
 
Yes it depends on the provider, the Rogers ROM will probably have something like MarketEnabler in the ROM which will fake the provider (T-Mobile or similar) as soon as the market is opened. ;)
 
As things stand I need to decide by Monday.

Given the fact that on the Hero the camera is pretty poor, and given the fact that you can port the Sense UI to a Magic, the only substantial difference seems to be the 3.5 jack.

I cant get my head around paying that much more for a jack, and the "feel" of the chassis (given that both are made by HTC, so i would assume a similar build quality), although I will take one in hand when I decide.

For what it's worth, I have a Hero right now, and love it to bits.
 
Oh I see!! I still like the Hero more. Get your friend a Hero if money isn't a issue if it is, get the Magic. Simple as that!
 
I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I didn't want to make another thread about it, so...

As far as I've read the current HTC android phones do not support transferring files through bluetooth (something about not having OBEX), is there a way around this without rooting/flashing the phones? I saw on some international forums that people have released free applications that make it work with varying results, but there's no indication if it is on the Leaf store in South Africa.

Any help is appreciated.

Nope, no file transfer; the only way to do it is the root/rom. In theory it will be sorted out when 2.1 is released (and there is a lot of speculation about when that will be.)

2.1 is already out with the Nexus. But, of course, since we have to wait for Leaf to get off their butts we may never get the upgrade. Anyway, 2.1 needs some powerful processing and 3D power... not sure if the Magic or Hero are up to it.
 
there is a free bluetooth file transfer app available on the market
