HTC Hero

So I went over to Vodaworld yesterday, spent some time in the Leaf store and then made my way to the Vodashop. The Hero isn't on Vodacom's books yet (should be in October) so I went for the Diamond 2 - LOVING IT!
 
I've got "Hero Hand" today from playing too long on the phone. This phone will make you lose loads of sleep - I can't put it down! Cool games and apps

How you finding the performance (i see thats the thing most people complain about)
 
been trying to pre book mine with MTN sp, but they are all a bunch of idiots, if it wasnt such a ball ache to port i would have done moved to nashua mobile.
 
I've really been pushing the phone and there is a very slight lag - only sometimes. Not enough to seriously annoy me. I've noticed that the homescreen(s) are much faster if you don't overload them with widgets that update in the background. I've set Twitter and mail etc to only update every hour or so. The browser is awesome, especially after the standard IE on windows mobile (the browser on my HTC Touch was HORRIBLE). The calendar takes a little getting used to after Windows Mobile but once you've figured it out its fine. The battery is great if you don't play a lot of games. I found that games using the g-sensor uses a lot of battery!

Re the apps:
- Abduction - a totally addictive game that uses the gsensor. So it feels as if you've got your own portible Wii - tilt and turn the phone to jump to various platforms
- Bonsai blast - awesome game
- Astrid - task manager with great extra features
- Google skymaps - this app is mindblowing, point the phone up to the sky to see which stars you are looking at
- OI file manager - a normal file manager - the phone doesn't come with one
- Puzzle blox - tilt and turn the phone to solve various puzzles
- Spare parts - this is essential - shows you all kinds of interesting info such as your battery and CPU history - this way you can see exactly which apps are chewing your battery and CPU, also has user statistics etc
- Sudoku free
- TasKiller - kill apps with one touch. The phone doesn't allow you to end applications, it automatically kills apps running in the background as and when the phone needs to. Makes performance much faster
Still playing around with the other apps so I don't really have an opinion on them yet. So far, I'm REALLY happy with the Hero
 
Nashua got more stock in late yesterday so trotted off to pick mine up this morning.

I am in awe of this device. Small, amazingly solid build. Wicked interface. Glad I chose this over the iPhone.

If in doubt .... just get it. I can't stop playing.
 
I spoke to Leaf this morning and stock arrived last week. The device is now available from their stores, Nashua Mobile etc.

It's got the latest ROM on it already 2.73.xxx.x

Perhaps that's why we waited a bit longer for ours to arrive.

Well worth it imho ...
 
2.73.405.5 - new rom number
2.73.421.5 - current rom number

Both start with 2.73. - is it the new rom though???

Yip - the build number is slightly different for SA, I suspect it's a custom ROM build for LEAF SA customisations for MTN such as the bright yellow MTN backgrounds on all the included HTC Scenes on my phone.

But it's most certainly the new one - no lag, super smooth.

Old ROM starts with 1.76.xxx.x
 
Why can't I open Word attachments from email?? What is Quickoffice for? Sooooo frustrating!!

It doesn't recognise .docx or .xlsx ie. all the new office 2007 formats. Really is frustrating.

just picked up mine last night - incredible phone. love it.

anyone know where you can get cases in Cape Town (preferably a store to feel/test them)?
