(AP) -- Taiwan smartphone maker HTC Corp. reported a 70 percent drop in first quarter profit as it faces keener competition from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.
HTC said Tuesday that profit amounted to 4.5 billion New Taiwan dollars ($152 million) from revenue of NT$68 billion in the three months through March.
Revenue was down 35 percent from a year earlier.
The company expects revenue to rise to NT$105 billion in the second quarter, with the marketing of the "HTC One" series phone that offers users a better camera and music experience in addition to a sleek design.
HTC chief executive Peter Chou said the company's biggest challenge has come from Apple's iPhone 4S launch that took up the lion's share of leading U.S. mobile operators' handset purchases.

So apple does it again, sending some guys tumbling just like that...

Sent from South Africas most popular smartphone BlackBerry

Wow the market is so fickle if things can change like that in a year.

But HTC have been off the smart phone radar for a while now. People are only looking at Apple and Samsung.

I reckon HTC is getting hammered by Samsung more than it is by Apple... Peter Chou has got it wrong...

Indeed. It seems the Desire was big, the Desire HD and the other variants and then the Sensation not so much. Those sales pretty much all went to the Galaxy S2. Even the Evo was a non starter.

HTC is cheap Chinese junk.. this is hardly surprising... Had one of their phones, died in less than 6 months..

+1.

I have a BB. I hate it.

I hate HTC even more. I had one... for LESS than a month before it failed for no reason. It's like a monster demon craps out the devices.

It would be a travesty if HTC went under.

Personally I love the type of phone they make, they give a phone character. Samsung do make quality products, but it's bland as can be and almost as if they put more research into the cheapest possible way of manufacturing without compromising structural quality, than anything else. It obviously has it's merits, their products are top notch and are great for a market where apple are trying to bankrupt the public, but as long as I can I'll take the device with a little bit of flair.

Oh forgot to say the one thing I have/had against HTC is that their devices tend to be rather heavy, but they seem to have gotten that right with the one series.

I reckon Huawei will catch on eventually though, it's the way of the future to mass produce these internet/communication devices and make them available to the public masses at very affordable prices. Throw in a little bit of quality/durability and your device is bound to sell, especially in Africa.

That Huawei doesn't look half bad actually.

Samsung the new Nokia? To be honest, I don't see the providers in South Africa offering many Samsung phones. Just Nokia and BlackBerry.

I woulnt trust that brand. Its owned by the Chinese government :D I get nervous even using them for modems :D A couple of governments have banned huawei devices on their government networks due to security concerns. Nice looking phone though.

I have nothing that they could possibly want :D

I would not use them in a secure environment either.

to answer ghoti/w1z4rd:

have yet to find backdoors and other sinister stuff in huawei's products...
