And if so, what is it like? Looks really nice to me. Small, with all the functions that could be needed, decent 2MP camera, and a huge screen...


Anyone care to share?
 
I have one, takes a while to get used to it and it can be a little slow sometimes but otherwise I'm happy with it. I use it quite a lot for making appointments and voicenotes so for that it's really handy. The size is awesome as it's no bigger than my old SE w800. Although I must admit, if I had the cash I would have gone for the tytin II.... that is an awesome phone!!!

Cool.

Speed might be a major issue for me. How slow is it? And can you use the normal keys to sms using T9 or do you have to use the keyboard?
 
Depends how much you want to spend..

You can get them locally for about R6500 - R8000

Or you can get a US billing address from www.myUs.com, buy an iPhone using Google Checkout (http://checkout.google.com , get the phone sent to the US billing address you signed up for at www.myUs.com, then they will ship it at a cost .. The iPhone shouldnt be more than 1kg so lets say $30 for shipping..

Then you pay 14% VAT and a bit of customs...

Not sure how much its going to work out exactly but should be under R5k

depends what you want the phone to do?
are you going to:
1 send lots of emails, set lots of appointments and sync it with Outlook, and use the other features (music player/camera/video) every once in a while?
or
2 play alot of music, surf the web, watch video and make the occasional appointment on the phone, send a moderate amount of emails?

1 Go with Windows Mobile - more of a business companion, but does everything the iPhone does, but less pretty (a lot less pretty in some cases)
2 Get an iPhone - more of a multimedia phone (also has the sex appeal of Angelina Jolie wearing a white t-shirt on a rainy day)

If only it were a simple choice of the two. That process to get an iPhone from overseas is too much mission. And I need to get the phone on contract here in SA anyway. The S710 is free on TopUp315 which is a definite possibility.

I will be sending a LOT of smss. It is very important that the sms system is fast and that typing is comfortable an easy.

Other than that, I like a nice, clear screen and will be making use of the camera and browsing the net occasionally. Otherwise the phone doesn't have to do much more than that.

It is hard to find a nice phone nowadays that has nice buttons for smsing, a nice big screen, and a decent camera.
 
Well as an iPhone user i can safely tell you, if you want to do ALOT of SMSing then the iPhone wont be that great for you

i've typed on a HTC and i can type much faster on that thing..but it aint as sexy as the iPhone..we all know that :D

But its all down to your needs at the end of the day..

COol, that is what I thought.

I am worried that some people are saying the HTC is slow, like when more than one app is running at the same time. I love the SE range because they are so fast- that is why I have steered clear of smartphones and PDAs till now.
 
Yeh you'll have to ask the current HTC owners about that...I've only played around with one...

I had an iMate Kjam once upon a time and i can tell you, the iPhone is THAT much better... its just in a class of its own.. using my phone has never been so fun :) its just an absolute pleasure to use

Also, Apple got the touch screen thing right..i think its largely to do with the fact that its multi-touch. All other touch phones are a hassle to use IMO (thats why i couldnt stand my iMate KJAM). No stylus required on the iPhone even! Input is very accurate

But, you should have a mess around on the iPhone if you can get hold of one... If you cant get hold of one of those to mess around with, even go to the apple store and mess around on a Ipod Touch..just to get the feel of it

Dont write the iPhone off just yet...

Hehe. Thanks for the advice. If the iphone were available here and if it were on some kind of reasonable contract I might consider it. A touch screen is by no means a plus for me. Too fiddly and slow.

The HTC S710 seems to be perfect - just like a normal phone, even in size, but with a slide-out keyboard and PDA functionality.
 
I'm not bothered by the S710 not having 3G - I plan to use wifi for internet and email at home and at work should it be necessary.

If you really need 3G, the S730 have 3G. Same as the S710, except for the 3G.
 
Chances are I might have to get one on contract. *sigh*

Not really what I want... but I need a proper phone, not just a dinky toy...

@ hj2k_x - on what contract do you get the phone free? Because I think of getting it on contract anyway, then use my CellC prepaid sim to avoid getting charged for calls and stuff.

Free on VC Talk130 at Vodashop. Should be the same for TopUp315, as it costs a little more.
