HTC S710 - Anyone have one?

A buddy of mine got him the HTC S710 and dislike it from the word go , he said it's a slow useless thing and don't use it anymore.I can get more info to why if you interested?
 
I have an HTC S710. Its DOG slow, It runs out of memory constantly even with a 2gig Flashcard, It gets confused, the predictive text is annoying - not nearly as good as a Nokia or Sony Ericsson. Sometimes the phone crashes and the only way to reset it is to take the battery out. The Phone Answer and End call buttons are joined with a little window at the center bottom of the phone (which is a light sensor to lite up the keyboard only at night or in dark places - clever), it breaks very quickly and causes the buttons to stick upwards sometimes. The Rubber Flaps that covers the memory port and the power/usb port is also severely annoying as they are too big or just don't stay shut!.
The Alarm feature is pathetic, if the phone is on silent or vibrate, forget getting woken up, and even if it does go off, it will only play the jingle once and that's that. Choose something long and annoying... The phone scratches easily, and the camera is not great!... ... and the GPRS (this phone has no 3G, only EDGE and i'm on Vodacom!) on this phone switches itself on whenever it wants too - so if i were you, disable it by going to "START - SETTINGS - CONNECTIONS - GPRS - VODACOM GPRS - and change CONNECTS TO: to anything other than The Internet. According to people online that travel overseas - they have been getting some serious bills from overseas providers as the GPRS costs are a real killer!...

Windows Mobile 6 on this phone - not sure if its right for this device, i often wonder if Mobile 5 would not be faster!...

The phone has its good points tho... The concept of the phone is fantastic. I like the slide out keyboard. Its nice and compact. The Contact Database is easily manageable via Outlook on your pc, just pop in the USB and it updates, lots of little details and pictures you can assign to each contact.

I would not recommend this phone, however i have been playing with the HTC Touch - VERY nice. But I believe the TytnII is much better!

At this point i'm considering returning the phone.
 
What about the SE K850i? Or do you need touchscreen to write sms'es with a stylus?

Wow, that is quite a damning review there man :( Is it really that bad? I am only finding good reviews on the net. I guess you never really know until you try the phone hey?

I must say the problems that you have mentioned are really quite severe and would certainly put me off getting it.

I had very high hopes for this phone as HTC has been punted as a DAMN good phone. Along came the S710. Its a very sexy phone, it has the standard phone features with the added advantage of a slide out keyboard. I figured - who needs touch screen....

The thing works - just not well at all!. Its just full of k@k. my SE K800i out preforms this phone. I guess my expectations were too high as the reviews and obviously some people are patient with its slow interface!.

I believe they made the S730 which is very similar with double the processor speed - but just not as nice looking - i can only guess that its a better experience!.

I've had mine now for 4 months - and as much as its handy with the keyboard and surfing the net etc... its also a pain to use. You constantly have to watch what you're typing as the predictive text just makes up its own mind sometimes, its really terrible!. Something that irritates me - i guess its because of the speed issue, if you're doing something and the phone rings, you have to wait for it to complete before answering!.

The WiFi also left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth... You can only use it to surf via a wifi point. You can only connect to your home router for internet, not browse your files on your pc with it.

After looking at the HTC Touch & the Nokia N95 (i'm no nokia fan) I must admit the Nokia is better than both!. The TOUCH has similar software issues but otherwise its a fun phone to use. It only becomes a pain when you need to use the stylus to type your way through something - i guess i prefer buttons...


The other day my Temp folder got full. It continuously harrassed me that my phone is running out of temp space. To clear it you had to go to Internet Explorer and clear the temp files. What a pain as it freezes your phone for about 5 minutes. You don't really get to see what its progress is... so you panic. Pushing the off button did nothing... So out comes the battery....

The other irritating thing... When you open a program its OPEN, it never Exits unless you go to the program manager and kill the application. Java applets are also a pain as it sometimes confuses the phone and causes the phone to freeze even after you've killed the java app.


What gets me - The edition of Mobile 6 on this phone and the one on the Touch are different - Pro and Standard it would seem. Standard isnt much better than any ordinary Sony Ericsson phone. The features (if you took word, outlook and excel out of the picture) is much the same as a standard smart phone without Windows on it!

Damn, that sucks man. Really doesn't sound like a phone I'd want then. I also much prefer buttons to touch screen and stylus. I see they did indeed make the S730 and it is indeed quite ugly :( Also, nowhere in SA seems to have heard of it...:(

Yeah, it sucks.

Speed is a must. I love my K810 because it is fast. Whatever you do, it is fast. This S730 looks promising - I don't love the styling but I think it might make typing easier, both on the numeric pad and the qwerty keyboard. And it is literally twice as fast as the S710.

Now to find it somewhere in SA....
 
I, myself cannot decide between the N95-8gb vs the HTC Tyth II, even though the Nokia beats it by far, I just want something different,qwerty, had Nokia all my life. In the end Nokia was my choice and I can't find a desent damn contract, because MTN took the N95 out of their FEB/MAR catalog.

Yeah I am not sure what the SP's are playing at these days with their contract pricing and offers.

Nokia is not for me. That HTC tytn II is a whopping R2799 payin on Talk130. That makes like 10 grand over two years, which is crazy.

Yesterday, for some reason my Mom's E65 wasn't receiving calls. So I switched off the phone and restarted. Once it passed the Nokia logo welcome screen etc., and got to the normal standby screen, it literally took about 1 minute and 30 seconds to become usable. I seriously couldn't do anything for 1.5 minutes. Crazy! :eek:

If it's a MTN contract, then yesterday for some reason or other MTN network was down for a couple of minutes.
