Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with the HTC Touch HD?

It seems at R12699 (inc vat) outright purchase price from HTC there are going to be very few that have experience...

Wanted to pay R8000 for it, but the current prices are nowhere near that, bought a Diamond instead...and I'm loving it.

What do you love about the Diamond? They're pretty similar

The scroll wheel, its pretty awesome for web browsing, I'll miss it when I eventually buy an HD. The screen feels a bit small on the Diamond when you're watching youtube or videos. The full qwerty keyboard also feels a bit small to me, I'm a bit more comfortable with the compact qwerty.

I also love the way the phone feels in my hand, its very light for a phone packing that much hardware. It just gets a bit warm (like a laptop) when you use 3G/GPS/heavy applications. I'm curious if the HD also gets so warm.

Yup, am buying a SE X1 instead at R9000 its a much better price and, I think, better phone.

Touch HD sounds like a good phone but many reviews say that the camera is below par and something they have missed just as in the iPhone 3G is the landscape keyboard in both smsing and emails but i guess the brilliant screen makes up for this.

I usually feel quite confused after reading/watching a cnet review. They lack the detail of GSMArena reviews. And after reading through the pros and cons and the conclusion, you somehow feel that the score assigned doesn't match what the rest of the article is saying.

Hey i know this is off topic but why are all the user reviews of ALL the phones on gsmarena so bloody useless? why is it always between 8.3 and and 8.8? for all phones? wtf? otherwise the website is amazing otherwise use it all the time

GSMarena is great but lately their reviews on new handsets have been delayed.I use Phonearena.com aswell there reviews are pretty in depth and they are normally very quick with new phone reviews.

Just played with the HTC Touch HD at the Leaf store in Vodaworld very dissapointing first impression, screen is brilliant but user interface leaves a lot to be desired.Ran my finger through the touch flo 3D icons there was about a 3 second lag. Then when I entered into the main menu the top menu bar flickered continuously and never stopped.Entered into the camera took a pic and looked at all the other photos that were taken by other people who tried the phone and the pictures are very very dissapointing for a 5.0MP camera.Photos look very similar to those taken on the 2.0MP HTC Touch P3450,there is just no clarity.Even when swiping my finger to switch among photos the lag between photos was unforgivable about 3-4 seconds.Tried typing a test message with it,the stylus works fine but its a complete mission to type with just your fingers, the iPhone 3G is untouchable in this area.
(keep in mind that the phone gets switched off at the end of each day and put back on in the morning,so gets reset everyday)

In my opinion just stick with the Touch Diamond its very similar and the screen on the Diamond is just as amazing just smaller and the quality of the photos are very good. The Touch HD offers nothing new with regards to the whole Touch Flo 3D interface.

A firmware upgrade will sort most of those problems out. A 5 megapixel image does take a while to render. The only reason the iphone scrolls through images so quickly is because itunes resizes them. But it would make sense for the Touch HD to have a thumbnail scrolling view of pics to make up for the lag. What is rediculous though is that phones are usually released before firmware is stable and user friendly enough to justify the crazy prices we have to pay.

Did the handset become unnaturally warm when you played with it?

Yes, the camera on the Diamond isn't that great either. The pictures look like they've been taken with a vaseline covered lens....even if you take a picture without the back cover. HTC needs to learn that quality>quantity.

Beta Culture..Hahah :D:rolleyes:
Devices should ship 99.8% perfect out the box. Next thing you'll see companies releasing firmware patches for things like microwaves and washingmachines.

Mmm. I've had the Touch HD with 16GB microSD for over 2 months now, and this is not my experience. TouchFlo 3D on stock 1.14.405.3 (22273) WWE ROM is considerably faster than on the 1.97 Diamond (which I had before before the HD). Sliding across the tabs has no delay, and there's no lag scrolling between photos. Perhaps the system you played with had
demotitis? My THD is pretty standard, with the following additional apps loaded:
- AM Music ID
- CorePlayer
- Garmin Mobile XT
- Google Maps
- Microsoft Reader
- HandyMap Pro
- MyMobiler
- Pocket eSword
- Pocket Stars
- SPB Backup, Time, Mobile Shell, Pocket Plus, Wireless Monitor
- WIMP

I'm not a phone camera user, so don't really care about 'quality', if that's the word to use for phone cameras. With such teeny-weeny lenses one can't expect much more than rough snaps, no matter what the pixel count.

A HardSPL for the THD was released the day before I went on holiday, and I see that Dutty and others have cooked up some ROMS for the HD. Once I've caught up with email and office backlog I'll download & blow in some new ROMS and see what's going. Overall I'm pleased with the performance of the Touch HD, and especially with TouchFLO 3D on this machine. It takes some getting used to after the Diamond, especially not having the D-pad, but I now quite happily get along without it. I'd rather have the whole front for the glorious screen, which still delights me every time I use the phone.

Arthur, trust you still enjoying your HD :)

I must disagree there; I find the quality on my TD unbelievable. I have also never been a fan of phones cameras and most are generally rubbish, but the TD can take some pretty amazing shots.

As for the HD, that interface was definitely faster than the TD. And on that huge screen is just a pleasure.

Just got off the phone with a sales rep at leaf. Outright price for the phone is R12,440 incl.
It is, however, available on contract from Nashua and Altech. Apparently Vodacom will release it "soon". When I asked when "soon" is, I was told anywhere from 1 week to 1 month.

"MTN are not currently testing this phone" - Wonder if this means they aren't going to release it?
