HTC Touch HD

The weirdest thing happened with the Touch HD yesterday. With the wifi active, and then connecting to the laptop using Bluetooth Internet Connection Sharing, the touch screen stopped recognising any input. The soft buttons also stopped working, though the volume buttons worked fine. A few soft resets and then removing the battery for a minute didn't fix anthing - the system kept booting into the TF3D Settings screen and no amount of jiggling and fiddling would get it to recognise any touch. As I was about to fly from George to Joeys I removed the battery for the duration of the flight. Back home a few hours later I replaced the battery and all worked fine.

Odd. Must have been a brain fart.

More than a brain fart.
I flew down to George yesterday evening. When I got there and switched on the phone, the touch screen didn't work at all. Still doesn't. After about 30 soft resets, and then a hard reset, the touch and soft buttons are dead.
Damnit, man. This is sooo irritating.

Hmmmm doesn't sound good there Arthur... hopefully just a glitch in the matrix...

I saw this weekend that Vodacom is offering this phone on a contract for R450 (or so) a month. When I am eligible for upgrade will I be able to switch to that contract to get the phone or do I have to stay on my current contract and, gulp, pay in for the Touch HD...

True, which contact did you see that on? I am on Talk130, and due for an upgrade on 10th April. At the moment it is a toss-up between the Experia X1 and the Touch HD, but the HD is in the lead at the moment for it's screen size.
I wouldn't mind paying R450 per month, as the Talk130 is R319, that means that R131 goes to the handset subsidy x24 months = R3,144 - I can live with that :D
Hopefully it will be cheaper when the new specials are released on the 7th April though...

That sounds annoying Arthur, will Leaf SA honour the warranty on the handset?

Well considering they're charging DOUBLE what the handset costs, they'd BETTER honor the warranty!

It was at chatz cellular at Alberton City.... they had the Touch HD for R450 or so on the window... naturally their website doesn't help....

I've got my eye on this phone at the moment - what you're saying is a bit worrying. The Samsung i8910 looks like a real scrapper - 8mp, AMOLED, Symbian, 720p video recording. Also the Touch Pro 2 is appealing. Somehow the HD doesn't do the magic for me, I can't figure out why. The Toshiba TG01 is also a great looking phone on the horizon - 1ghz processor, hi def wvga, wm 6.5.

Arthur can I ask something? How is the HD screen quality outdoors? Does it suffer from glare? That's very important to me because I want to use it for reading and sometimes outdoors.

I phoned VC Upgrades today to check on what the pay-in would be on a Talk130. I was quoted a pay-in of R5,299, but I would like to know the following when upgrading with VC:
When there is a Cash pay-in price, would I be required to pay the amount to the outlet, or could it be added as a lump sum to my next invoice? (company owes me some money, so this would be a way to use that up)

Does anyone believe the price will come down much after the 7th of April when the new specials are released?

This is my #1 choice for my next upgrade, but I feel the price VC is asking for it is ridiculous.

Pay-in of R5299? Anyone who pays that is out of their mind if you ask me.

I read that it has problems playing back a lot of video formats as well, that's disappointing. Omnia/Omnia HD is DIVX compatible. DIVX support should be standard in big screen phones.

Simple solution is to install something like CorePlayer. While I do agree that it should've had divx support out-the-box, installing a media player seems like a simple solution.

Oh yea...that's true hey. One of the advantages of WM having lots of apps out there.

Grimspoon...

What's even worse is when you look at what the rest of the world is paying for that phone and then you start to wonder why is the rest of the world paying (the equivalent of) R5280 for the phone and we are paying R11 999?

IMO the HD has a great camera - for a winmo device - it takes better quality pics than the omnia i had,the overall performance of the GUI and TF3D is acceptable to me...

Oh and Garmin Mobile XT works like a charm on the huge 3.8inch LCD !
