HTC Touch HD

That sounds annoying Arthur, will Leaf SA honour the warranty on the handset?
Yes, or so it seems. Arrived back in Joeys today and called Leaf. According to their tech support line there's a two-year worldwide warranty on the device. I'm taking it in tomorrow.

As an aside, with the Touch HD out of commission I had to get something to phone with. The only device available at Vodashop Oudtshoorn (where I was visiting) was a Samsung SGH-U800 Soul b at R2650 cash. Using it for the last 2 days made me realise again how totally dependent I am on a PDA phone. I had to install the Samsung syncing software to get my Contacts from laptop to phone. It worked OK, but the Samsung app had to download 192 updates (yes, 192) on a leeched wifi connection before I could do the xfer.

Cerebus: Do you mean in direct sunlight? I can't recall ever battling to see the screen or anything (and I'm very long-sighted), though I can't now specifically remember noting performance in direct sunlight, to be honest. The screen is glorious. I have spent many hours reading web articles, RSSing, and generally surfing. I set the font to large, rotate the screen, and never tire from reading on the absolutely best screen in palmtopdom.

If anyone comes across any specials relating to the Touch HD on contact, both VC & MTN, please post them here.

Thanks arthur that's exactly what I wanted to know. If I got that one it would be primarily because I wanted to use the screen as an e-book reader. I've had a lot of nice screens that suffered from bad glare outdoors. I guess you can't get 100% away from that but as long as it's not a standout feature.

I know Vodacom has the Touch HD for 438/month. That's not exactly a special but it's the cheapest I've found.

Well that is good to hear Arthur; at least you are not stuck with a faulty phone.

I can't say I have ever, ever like Samsung phones. In fact they are my worst. I had one a few years ago and gave me endless uphill and since then have sworn never to touch one again. I find them so limited, there is nothing you can do on them. They are definitely geared for people who only call and sms. (Im not talking about the omnia btw, that is a different story) ;)

I'm coming round to that view. My only previous Samsung experience was with an i780, which I had for less than a week and didn't like (also a temp fill-in for a dead HTC). The U800 was the only phone I could buy outright that also supported 3G for the laptop. As soon as the Touch HD is back I'll flog it (ie the Samsung U800).

Oi, the vagaries of technology.

As I was prepping the system to take to Leaf for a warranty repair the touch screen started working again. At least it saved me the trip.

Twice now the screen stopped recognising touch - and both times it was when flying to/from George. My only thought is perhaps condensation is forming during flight, causing the screen to go wonky.

Now I'm going to blow in miri's WM6.5 ROM.

I am very keen to hear how WM6.5 went. Had a look at some YouTube demos and it looks quite good.

Glad to hear it is back to normal. I thought the air on planes was pretty dry?
Keep us updated on the WM6.5 update.

Miri's Premium WM6.5 was just posted on XDA-Dev. Flashing now ... 35% ...

Edit: 100% flashed. Hard reset. Now booting WM6.5 for first time ...

Wow! Immediate first impression is WM6.5 is so much crisper and faster. Now learning the new UI and syncing Contacts, Calendar, etc ...

OoOoOo Nice, is this for Diamon as well by any chance? Do you hardspl and all that jazz?

It's VV nice, I must say. The WM UI is quite different. So far I haven't been able to find Regional Settings to set the time display to 24h format ... but learning. I like.

The fonts and text are much larger and more readable. It found the Vodacom SIM and configured comms to work. Much cleaner UI.

Yes, there surely must be a WM6.5 for the Diamond - check out XDA Developers. And yes, I loaded a HardSPL.

yeah me too. I looked at some of the video reviews on Youtube and I reckon this is the phone to get.
