HTC Touch pro

Just a few things regarding a comparison between the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro.

I have the Touch Pro, however, you should note that my previous phone was a Sony Ericsson P900 (purchased in 2003) and thus just about any of the current generation of phones would simply blow me away. Therefore I'm REALLY impressed with the Touch Pro.

I know alot of folks say that its just a Touch Diamond with a keyboard, and while that may be true, I will say that typing on the touch screen is really difficult. It takes forever to type messaages if I'm trying to punch it in on the touch screen, the keys on the virtual keyboards just seem too small and sometimes I end up hitting the other keys instead. On my first day of use, my first thoughts were, "Thank God this thing has a slide out keyboard". Of course, one can type on the virtual keyboards with the stylus, but that takes more time since you are punching one key at a time. While the built in T9 text prediction is very impressive, it cannot fix everything, especially if you have already started spelling a word incorrectly from the 2nd letter onward. The tactile feedback on the slide out keyboard is superb.

I will say that the battery life is not impressive at all. At most the phone lasts two days on a single full charge. Of course during these 2 days I will be using the GPS, Wifi, 3G, sending and receiving SMS/MMS/Email, listening to MP3's and of course I do make and receive a fair amount of phonecalls. So while I am using the phone alot, the battery is nowhere near as good as what I expected it to be. One should note though that the battery in the Touch Pro is a longer life battery compared to the one in the Touch Diamond. I contacted Leaf earlier today and they said that they would be getting extended life batteries for the HTC Touch Pro in about 3 weeks time, though thats another R500 down the drain.

The following review will probably give a better comparison between the two phones:
When we looked at the HTC Diamond the TouchFlo 3D was a major disappointment, on this device however it is now a major plus, right out the box it is fast and smooth and really enhances the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. Finger scrolling, flicks and swipes are all easily done and work 100% of the time, it is now a brilliant addition to the handset, HTC have done a great job refining this software.

One should note though that the HTC Touch Pro is about 6.6mm thicker than the Touch Diamond. When choosing between the two phones you just have to weigh the pros and cons and decide which suits you best. In my case I decided to pay more for a thicker phone so that I could get the slide out keyboard, better battery life, a few bug fixes and the option of expanding and changing the phones storage space as per my personal requirements.

I must say that I am pleasantly used to the onscreen KB on my diamond and can type sms's, emails at probably the same pace as I can on a hardware KB...For the size difference, the Diamond is a winner for me. The Pro is a tad chunky.

You're probably alot more dexterous than I am, I've taken extended periods of time to try practicing on the virtual keyboards and changing between the different ones problem is that I get frustrated too fast and then switch to cheat mode (Slide out keyboard).

Anyone have any prices for the Touch pro (e.g retail vs say talk 300 etc)?

The hardware keyboard is a plus for me as I keep hearing how difficult a touch screen keyboard is, I've never personally used one yet though. Decisions decisions. . .

Sorry, can't help you there, purchased it last week from Leaf in Cedar Square for R8 800 on prepaid package.

I guess virtual vs hardware keyboard boils down to a matter of personal preference, as Grimspoon said above, he enjoys the experience with the virtual keyboard and in my case I find it to be extremely frustrating. Even though the touch pro (and diamond i think) come with about 3 different types virtual keyboards and 3 different types of handwriting recognition interfaces I still always end up going back to the hardware keyboard. I was a pretty lazy SMS typist back when I had my SE P900, I used to rely on word prediction to finish just about every word for me and in some cases I just avoided replying SMS messages to some people because I just didnt want to go through the effort of clicking letter by letter with the stylus or relying on the keypads T9 dictionary . Now its a real a pleasure to type messages, notes or anything else on the phone and I can do it really fast.

Well for one, using the touch screen on the iphone is not easy, nothing beats a kb
I'm no iPhone hater, in fact I may purchase one next week for my girlfriend, but I think you might find the following video interesting :

Now if Vodacom would just get stock so I can upgrade...

I reckon you can buy them out right for around 8.5-9k while on a talk 300 your pay in would probably be around 4-5k, not cheap at all. I'm waiting for the SE Experia. Hopefully the Sony will be a lot cheaper than the HTC. The 2 handsets are practically the same barring the brand... Experia is manufactured by HTC...

Vodacom says I can phone them each day to check stock for the Touch Pro as they receive new lists each day. YAY for customer service in SA!!! :(

hahaha.... yeah, typical!!! At least their phones work....

Ok, just did todays call which went better than yesterdays. Stock arrives tomorrow YAY! :)

Pay in on Talk500 is R3499 less discount (and some negotiating with the operator ;)) = R1699 pay in + R150 admin fee.

It's for the HTC Touch Pro. They gave me a discount of R1000 based on call spend which knocked the price down to R2499.00 and then the conversation went something like this:

Vodacom Operator: I have calculated a discount of R1000.
Me: The most I am willing to pay for it is R2000.
Vodacom Operator: As I said we have done the calculation and the discount is R1000. You can pay that off at Rxxx per month if you like.
Me: Well, I am paying cash. The most I am willing to pay for it is R2000 total.
Vodacom Operator: I will need to speak to my team leader. Please hold.
Me: Sure
Vodacom Operator (after holding): Ok, I spoke to my team leader and he is willing to offer a total discount of R1800 which brings your pay in to R1699.
Me: Ok cool :D
