HTC TyTN II (Codename: Kaiser)

i have no clue about TomTom. I also posted a question about it a while ago but I was unable to figure out where / how to get a hold of the software myself...

If you find out let me know!

Try this. No hacking required. Worked for me. But you will still have to buy the maps.

I've found the Tomtom 6 installer that shipped with the Tytn2 overseas, I wonder if that'll fix the delay issue? You obviously have to buy the maps, but it's dirt cheap at 50EUROS in my opinion.

Lemme know if anyone wants to try it, it's a Kaiser specific installer.

I didn't notice any delays. There's a screen that shows satellite data and it's updated about once every second. You can see the bar graphs and other numbers update about once a second.

Yeah its been noted earlier in this thread that the delay seems to be there for all applications except TomTom.

I mailed Mobitrak about the Handymap issues on TyTN II and got a response from them on the same day. I copy & paste their response here:

Dear Sir,

TyTn II GPS does not use standard protocol. It is using Qualcomm chipset, which is not main stream in GPS market. HandyMAP will release a version on Ai Gold for TyTn II user today. We will follow up a software for you. This new software will not work with other standard GPS system.

Please note HandyMAP core engine PaPaGO is official bundle software of TyTn II in HTC Asia.

Best regards,

Yeah right. The TomTom version I use was released in January before the TyTn II was released. As far as I can see the TyTn II uses the standard NMEA protocol.
I had an issue a while back with HandyMap using the full SA map. It worked on an IPAQ with 64MB memory but reported a memory error on a 128MB PDA2K
I politely submit that the gentleman who replied to your e-mail is probably an outstanding purveyor of GPS related paraphernalia who may not fully comprehend their functioning.

Dude .. the TyTN II uses an assisted GPS chip unlike the SIRF III chip found in your day to day GPS ...
Have you tried to use the GPS on your TyTN II without a SIM card in the device? Yes it does make use of NMEA .. the difference is the way in which the data gets fed thru ...

I've mailed Garmin and they've confirmed they'll have something for the Tytn2 in December. I reckon I'm gonna wait before I buy anything.

It's a real pity you can't get a demo version of Navigon Navigator since I'd really like to try them all before buying. So far Tomtom seems like the best option since they've proven themselves over the years and it's the cheapest.

At double the price the Navigon software will really have to be awesome.

For the record, Mobitrack actually did follow up on the mail they sent me (my post above) and e-mailed me a link to updated Handymap software today. I am downloading it and will test it later today. I'll just check with them whether it is OK to share the link here...

But, then, it seems a TyTN-specific Handymap version has indeed been released today! :)

As a sidenote, this is the second time I have mailed Mobitrak regarding a Handmap query and I'm quite impressed with their response. Especially following up with mailling the link the way they did.

Except for the obvious problems I'm not at all impressed with Handymap AI Gold - the user interface is the worst I've even seen.

Has anyone managed to get Garmin Mobile XT working on the Tytn2 yet? I reckon that's the one I'll end up buying. Tomtom is great, but I prefer Garmin since I've got a Streetpilot and love the interface.

You had better luck than I did. Care to share the link with us? I didn't see anything on the Handymap site.

wohoo, ordered my TyTn II on Procall 120 for R398.50 p.m. hope it is worth all the trouble...

ERROR: File not found

What are we trying to download?

A version of Handymap that should run on the TyTn II. The link didn't work for me too. They also put map updates and program updates on this server. I don't quite understand why they can't put these files on the Handymap server.

THE LINK TO THE TyTN II HANDYMAP GPS VERSION IS BELOW.

Mobitrak gave me permission to share the link on this forum once I have tested it.

I have tested the program right now, and it seems to work just fine. At least, the data feed in the "Stream" view now comes through every second is it should.

Mobitrak pointed out that
* We are the first people to get access to this file. Was released this morning.
(I guess they are trying to say we should consider it a "beta", lol)
* They have a very large TyTN II user group on Handymap Ai Gold
* The version is TyTN II-specific and may not work on other devices
* The South African market is very important to them

Here is the link
(Apparently the link is only valid for 10 days)

In the mail in which they gave me permission to share this link, they asked whether I could do them the favour and also share some more information about Handymap in South Africa. I'll comply with their request and repeat what they mailed me here (hope its OK with the forum's policies?). These statements come from them and do not necessarily represent my personal opinion, although I am a very happy Handymap user:

[Start of what they asked me to say]
* Handymap has a localised presence in South Africa and as such release South African maps and updates faster than their competitors
* Map updates are free, twice a year, for the lifetime of the product. Next South African Handymap map update is due in three weeks.
* "Coverage is 30% more than Garmin" (not sure in what sense they measure coverage, but this is what their mail says)
[End of what they asked me to say]

I guess its fair to offer them this short sales pitch in return for offering this forum first access to the updated version :)

I can certainly confirm from personal experience that Handymap's database of speed cameras in Gauteng and Cape Town is quite comprehensive (and accurate!) :D

Their support e-mail address is [email protected].

I have tested the Handymap TyTN II version more thoroughly now. Works perfect on my device.

I have also tested it using my external Bluetooth GPS receiver and it still works fine on my TyTN II with this version of Handymap. Right now I got the internal GPS on COM4 and the external GPS on COM6, and it works fine when I switch between the two receivers. Position updates once per second as it should.

I'm so glad this lag thing is now resolved...

From day one I have had problems with the camera on my TyTNII. It would take up to 5 seconds to focus and the photos where always quite hazy. Also, the viewfinder was EXTREMELY slow.

I fixed all of that this morning. There was a fingerprint mark on the camera lens inside the cover. (I guess these things happen if you assemble a phone while driving).

The auto focus is now almost instantaneous and the photos now look like pictures from a 3MP camera should look.

Glad you solved that.

For those of you buying new TyTN II's, its worth noting HTC's return policy.

If you return the phone
* within 5 days of purchase; and
* before the phone has accumulated 30 mins talktime
...HTC will exchange the unit, no questions asked, when you return it.

It is worthwhile to test all the functions thoroughly before you start using the phone.

(The policy above is the way MTN Service Provider explained it to me at least. I have tested them, and they were absolutely willing to exchange the phone 3 days after I bought it, without even checking the phone to see what was wrong).

I'd like some opinions regarding battery life. I find that is not as good as say a Nokia. So far all PPC phones I have had have somewhat dissapointing battery life.
